The Granny Square (afghan) pattern

I love the granny square pattern as it's so versatile. I have used this pattern to create baby sweaters, blankets and even rugs. The pattern can be modified to use as many threads as you need for desired thickness (such as for a blanket or rug) or include a mixture of thread colors to give a unique and artsy look. Here's some more info on the granny square pattern, used to crochet afghans. A very simple pattern to learn and enjoyable to work on the squares at home in front of the TV or on the go (as you can tuck a few squares into a large ziplock bag with your yarn and needles and take in your purse for times when you have to wait).

This pattern looks so beautiful yet complex. I can't imagine it would be too easy to learn. How long would it take to perfect this type of crochet?

I've tried all kinds of crochet patterns, including very elaborate crocheted doll dresses. And, for me, this granny square pattern is the easiest but the beauty is how it looks complex. The finished look is so vintage. Hopefully, you will give it a try.

This pattern is super easy to learn. Just start out slow if you are a beginner at it and over time your speed will increase. You can adapt the granny square to almost anything. The other day I saw a really cute woman's vest done in this pattern (with the front and the back). It works for so much more than just blankets.

What a lovely idea! You can even change the yarn for each round. What a cute gift idea for any mom to be.

Very old fashioned and quaint! I think it's like something my grandmother would have in her house but it's very beautiful.

Good tip for taking it with you on the go. Will have to try that out and then maybe I would be able to complete one!

I have used stitching (such as with yarn needle and thread) to join my squares and also just simple slip stitches with hook and yarn from the reverse side of the squares. Either one works fine, just depending on your own preference.

This is such a relaxing activity, ideal for someone who is sedentary and wants a very peaceful craft to do while watching television or talking with friends.

I've tried almost every crochet stitch and pattern and found the granny square to be the best/easiest pattern to make. It only looks complicated but is mostly a repetition of a few favorite familiar stitches done in a square.

The squares are then attached to form a large quilt.

A very fun activity. The Granny Square (afghan) pattern
