How much video effects are enough and where do they fit?

Most of us have seen Matrix, the bullet-time effect was amazing and that movie is filled with superb effects. At least according to me. However, if you create a movie, short or long, or an intro. How much effects are actually good and how much is enough?

We've seen great movies like The Godfather and Titanic. None of them have cool super effects. Nothing flashy, no shaking cameras or crazy lightning. A movie like Transformers for instance, are obviously filled with effects, but I'm not talking about effects as in a transformer. I talk about effects like lightning, slow-motion, shaking grounds or text and lightning.

This is obviously hard to answer too, as some movies or intros are superb with tons of effects. Imagine Titanic. Wouldn't be too good if Leonardo could kill people with a laser from his eyes. Right? - But it wouldn't be the same if Iron Man couldn't fly..

So, where to use effects and how much is enough?

I would say depending on the movie category, thats what decides how much to use. The Matrix is probably one of the best movies i have ever seen. The special effects are way over the top but for a Sci-Fi action movie you would expect this kind of thing to be done. If you where watching a chick flick or a documentary you wouldn't want to see so much visual effects. When it comes to my personal preference the more special explosions and bullet dodging you have in a movie the more excited i am about it. I mean who doesn't want to see people flying around or dodging bullets? These types of movies appeal to the brain because we wish we could do the things we see on the big screen. Thanks for sharing!

I love special effects in movies, that make things so much more exciting!

I have to be honest though that when I am watching a lot of so called professional Youtube videos I am very often put off by the effects. I use Youtube to find out information and I believe that less is more here!

Thank you both for your replies. I appreciate it. I do agree with you that special effects are awesome and I love most of them, but as Lynne stated, I watch like a billion youtube videos per day and I feel a bit disturbed most of the times, due to all their crazy effects.. Some people doesn't seem to understand that less is more sometimes.. How much video effects are enough and where do they fit?

I believe you just answered your own question. How much video effects are enough and where do they fit? It really depends on where the effects would be used. I mean, Titanic movie with Transformer effects would be so, informal right? So using the necessary effects depending on the genre of the movie is always the way to go. After all, each of us have our own tastes so it would always vary.

It probably depends on some videos you're editing but for me when I edit videos like for YouTube like a vlog content video, I usually put a bunch of video effects in their just to make sure audience will like it and they will definitely do the same thing. And also, for me having so much effects are part of the movie but one thing for sure is movies don't need that much effects just to say that it's a great or amazing movie, it really depends on the story they made.

i think the effects should only be used when the screenplay demands it. If they are used "just because" it means they are unnecessary and too many of them can ruin a movie, just like in the Transformers movie you mentioned. The Matrix needed these effects for pushing the story forward.

This depends on what you want and how you want as your video to look. These days people like effects and a good video raise traffic and followers. Personally, I do not use too many effects in my own videos.
