If anyone is ever vacationing up here in the Mount Washington area, I highly recommend the Weather Discovery Center. It is an interactive science museum in North Conway, NH where you can learn about the science of climate through really fun interactive stations of information. My husband and I took our girls there a few weeks ago and they had a blast and it wasnt even that expensive. We paid $2 each for myself and my husband and all the kids were free, 6 and under!
They have an air cannon, which is really cool, it kind of looks like a drum on one side and a cannon on the other and you hit the drum-looking side and a few feet away from the cannon side has like a beaded curtain sort of thing. When you hit the air cannon on the drum side you can see the beading curtain move! The kids liked that alot! They had a station about wind and how fast it can go. The weather museum has a wind room and you go in and it was set up like the head station of the Mount Washington Observatory, which is on top of Mount Washington!! It was cool, had a desk set up with an old fashioned type writer and some books, there was a wood stove, and then right above all of that was like a loft which was set up as a sleeping area. There is a button on the wall you can press and then all of a sudden it sounded and felt like there was a huge snow storm going on outside this house we were in (inside the museum)! We heard wind howling, window shutters banging, and it even started shaking. The kids got a little freaked out but after we explained that it wasn't actually happening and that it was just showing us how windy and crazy it gets on the top of Mount Washington, they were ok and kept wanting to press the button! LOL
The red thing is the air cannon and that house is the wind room!!!!!!!
There was pretty cool flow tank in there too that the kids were really interested in. So this tank that you kind of hover over has little sail boats floating on a few inches of water and all around the water are what reminded me of those little computer fans...LOL So the part of this flow tank you kind of hover over has buttons to press to start which ever numbered and colored button you pressed! The kids really enjoyed that interactive station!! LOL Also a gift shop area to buy souvenirs and clothing!
My family really enjoyed this museum and from what I am understanding, we missed a whole floor of the museum!! LOL I don't even know how that happened, so if what we saw was pretty cool, I cant wait to go back and see what we missed!! =]
Hope this helps anyone who is interested in a trip up to Mount Washington! Thank you for reading!!
