1) Try to find a "niche" (niche is a small segment of the market , gamers for instance) and target that group in a market sense. Ideally you yourself should be familiar with this niche , so that you can relate to that group better and really predict what will sell and what will not. A way to do this is to design t-shirts or niche-specific merchandise (even stickers) and then reach the market stream of that specific group of people. If you are actually part of that market segment , that step proves easy enough. Being in the rock-metal music genre social circles for instance makes it easy for you to sell a product of value for that specific group.
2) By being an actual part of a specific niche , you can also probably evaluate products associated with that group. Me myself I used to play card games when I was younger and I have cards to sell. So I can truly evaluate my cards and compare cost to profits. Also many people sell their old cards in bulks and that gives you the chance to buy these bulks and then selectively sell them at a higher price and make profit.
As a general guideline I would suggest that you sell something that is "infinite" so that is doesn't become obsolete after a point. You can always design a new t-shirt or a mug. And you can always buy cards of any kind and then evaluate and sell them , but something very trend specific may not sell in the long run. Something I would also like to sell but lack the resources would be medieval-Celtic-viking style rings ,necklaces etc with authentic designs. I hope my post was helpful giving you a general picture. Ideally for me , an Online store would be an auxiliary stream of income so that I can experiment with different strategies and if it proves profitable I would invest something extra towards it's development. I have two strategies that you can implement , regarding an Online store. 1) Try to find a "niche" (niche is a small segment of the market , gamers for instance) and target that group in a market sense.
