You can use Gimp to alter an image or create a fairly professional looking logo.
Though you might best hire someone if you want ultra high quality logo image.

There is no way to get around having to spend money if you are not a graphics design artist.

Isn't Adobe rather expensive, around $600 or so? I'm sure there is a free trial but it just sounds very steep of a price to pay for someone who is only dabbling in design.

@Ashlyn Yes, Adobe is quite expensive but you have to understand that it does a lot more than designing professional quality logos. You can design almost anything from logos, business cards, flyers, ifographics as well as whole websites in Adobe Photoshop.

However, if you are limiting yourself to just logo designing, there are plenty of other low cost solutions you may find having price range of $20 to $150.

You can start with Logo design studio for a cost of $20. And using it you can sell your own logo design services to others which according to current market rate can go anywhere from $20-$75 (professional ones can go as high as $500).

In order to create a good logo you can use various programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator or even free program GIMP. However, you need skills to use these programs. If you don't know how to use these programs, you may try logo making tools. If you search online you can find numerous logo design programs. You can create amazing logo with these programs, however, you have to pay quite a large sum to have the logo. Once you pay for logo, you can use it on any way. If you don't have budget for such program, you can use Fiverr service. You can get a logo for just $5 on FIverr.
