For professional looking, you need some skills and good software, or hire professional to do it for you....
    Anyway i use Photoshop for all my designs. Good luck with your work

    You can use Gimp to alter an image or create a fairly professional looking logo.
    Though you might best hire someone if you want ultra high quality logo image.

    There is no way to get around having to spend money if you are not a graphics design artist.

    Isn't Adobe rather expensive, around $600 or so? I'm sure there is a free trial but it just sounds very steep of a price to pay for someone who is only dabbling in design.

    Well if you are smart, you can reset those trails every 3o days which software that best to design good logo and use it for free

    @Ashlyn Yes, Adobe is quite expensive but you have to understand that it does a lot more than designing professional quality logos. You can design almost anything from logos, business cards, flyers, ifographics as well as whole websites in Adobe Photoshop.

    However, if you are limiting yourself to just logo designing, there are plenty of other low cost solutions you may find having price range of $20 to $150.

    You can start with Logo design studio for a cost of $20. And using it you can sell your own logo design services to others which according to current market rate can go anywhere from $20-$75 (professional ones can go as high as $500).

    Go with Adobe Illustrator and Corel Design..
    Both are Great software for quality logo and graphics design.

    In my personal opinion go with adobe illustrator.
