First i want to explain a little but of what mastering is. Mastering, is a song or project post production. To give you an idea Mixing is the first step its like washing your car, Mastering is the wax and buff job. Now that you understand the basic concept of mastering let me explain how i go about it.
First thing i do is make sure that my mix is not clipping at all. If you have audio that clips it will get distorted once the mastering process is complete. Make sure when your done mixing non of the audio is touching the edges. Below i have a incorrect Example:

Don't worry if your audio sounds real low when you get ready to master it. the mastering phase will bring the audio all they way up without making it clip thus giving you a loud crisp clean sound. When mastering you also have to find the correct balance for the lows mids and high frequencies. You will need a good pair of studio monitors and some good ears. Remember mixing and mastering is 85% listening.
