Herbal DIY Cough Drops...Easy Recipe!

I am so loving pinterest and all the wonderful homemade things I cannot wait to try! I'm sure we all have had our share of colds and coughs and we always seem to turn to a cough syrup or cough drops! Now, with the dilemma of not knowing what goes into our foods, i'm sure we would want to know what we are consuming in our medicines...because after all they are supposed to helping us get better....right? who really knows though! I have found a recipe to make your own cough drops, made with all natural products and herbs.

what you will need:
1. 1 tablespoon or one tea bag peppermint tea leaves
2. 1 tablespoon or tea bag or chamomile tea
3. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
4. 1/2 teaspoon of ginger
5. 3/4 cup of boiling water
6. 3/4 cup of honey
7. essential oils like peppermint and thieves which is great for the immune system but these are optional.
8. parchment paper
What you need to do:
1. steep peppermint, chamomile, ginger and cinnamon in boiling water for 10 minutes
2. strain off water and pour into a small saucepan
3. add honey
4. heat over a medium heat setting until it starts to boil
5. continue to boil this mixture until the temperature of the liquid reaches 300* (be careful because it can burn easily when it is this hot)
6. let the mixture cool for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture gets syrupy (this is where you would add your essential oils in)
7. drop small spoonfuls onto parchment paper and let it cool.
8. dust these with some corn starch or potato starch to help absorb the condensation and prevent them from sticking together in storage. store in an airtight container!

Hope this helps those of us who would like to be more cost efficient at home!! Enjoy!!

This sounds like something I would try as it's mostly things you already have in the pantry anyway. I don't really like using cough syrups and prefabricated medicine (especially for my child) as there is always the risk of over-dose. And, in the past ten years, the Tylenol company has admitted they used old equipment for manufacture of their child cold and cough medicine which led to micro shards of metal getting into the liquid meds. That kind of made me mad at the company, so I try to boycott their products whenever possible. Anyway, I also read the reason a child cough syrup works is because it's so sweet! Can you imagine? One time, I tested out this theory by using sugar and also honey and it has a similar throat soothing effect for suppressing coughs. No side effects of course. Natural is always best! I will definitely keep this in mind, as cold season is coming up. We might need something like this in the house. Thanks for sharing. Herbal DIY Cough Drops...Easy Recipe!

Oh this is great Ermini2 and something that I can really make use of. As you know I am an addict and so many cough mixtures have Codeine as one of the ingredients which I am not allowed. You must have heard of people getting addicted to cough syrup?

Anyway when it comes to medication it is often really hard for me. I always have to check the packet inserts and talk to my doctor and/ or pharmacist before I take anything. The general rule is I am allowed Paracetemol. A common problem I have is even though I tell the pharmacist I can't have any addictive substances you will be shocked how many times they try and give me medication with something I am not allowed!

I am so much happier using natural remedies as far as I can, so thank you for this.

and that is ridiculous, that they dont pay attention because if you just trusted them and took the medicine they gave you, you could end up in a huge problem! its really good thing that you pay attention! im glad this will help in your household, ehen i saw this recipe for cough drops i also fou d one for a cough syrup. i will be sure to post about that for you later on today! thanks for responding Lynne!

Yes well it is my responsibility in the end to double check and I am so glad I do. I now have a GP and a pharmacist that I trust and know all about my problem. I still check but they haven't made a mistake yet, thankfully.

Time is money! That's really true for a busy mom or a dad, whether they work inside the house, as a freelancer or have an outside of the house job. When my daughter was a baby and toddler and much younger, I tried to work a little online (this was before the 'gig economy' hit America, so mostly that was just affiliate marketing and writing) but mostly my job was being a full time mom and I had a ton of spare time for making handmade items like this, even handmade diapers) and would always do these kinds of things. I really like the idea of homemade cough treatments as they seem natural, though possibly I would use a lot of the ingredients in a homemade tea. There's no reason not to do that but as you said, there are a lot of steps! I still like it though Herbal DIY Cough Drops...Easy Recipe!

homemade diapers? no way! that's pretty sweet and very talented! i wish i was good at hings like that. i am not very gifted when it comes to sewing and knitting or crocheting at all! LOL im more of a craft and DIY type of person!

homemade cough treatments, i think are a huge plus because like Lynne mentioned, the codeine in these syrups can be dangerous to kids and even adults in more than one way! i am all for helping to save money and making things more natural in the house! thanks for responding Bev!

yea but i would totally make these, especially for the kids. when their throats bother them they eat cough drops like they're candy. LOL and who knows what the heck is in there, at least with these homemade ones, i know what is in it, who made it, and how safe it is for us all. definitely on the list of life hacks and DIY recipes to try!

Making these would really be nice, even though you will have to work on the ingredients right. An easy way to ensure you are having that you have made on your own, it will really feel good.

Really nice tip!
I loved the idea of making cough medication in the form of candy. How cool is that ! I will be helpful to manage kids, as most of them resist having medications.

I really want to try them out. Very easy to make and it also would be very effective.

Thanks for that amazing tip. In my experience home remedy mixing up to 2 Tsp of honey in warm water with tea or lemon juice really works with hacking coughs. Expensive medicine-flavored cough drops are no better than inexpensive candy-flavored drops or hard candy.

Thanks for this, my mom has always been very homemade medicines style, so she will really appreciate it. She used to do many home remedies when we where kids, and well here we are, so I guess they worked pretty well. She used to make us inhale vapor from a boiling water pan, or from hot water on the sink, that way all the bad things went out while coughing. And her favorite recipe for cough was a mix of honey, lemon juice and eucalyptus. That thing tasted terrible, but sure it was great against cough.

Wow. Thank you for the information. Sometimes home remedy and diy medicines are effective than other drugs. I prefer herbal medicine than the chemically made medicines.

Thank you for sharing this great recipe. Ginger is definitely an effective remedy for coughs. Normally when I have a cough I make ginger tea and add some honey to it. Not only does the ginger tea tastes good but it is equally soothing.

I love Pinterest. I have learnt how to make many D.I.Y items on there. There are also many homemade remedies and recipes. This is the best site on the internet. You can search for anything you want on there.

I'm glad there is someone else who shares my views on Pinterest. I also love love it! They are so many things to discover. For me it's like going to Disney world.

Your cough syrup is also not a bad idea. it's a bit complicated though. Not everyone maybe able to find all the ingredients . They might also be expensive in some Countries. It maybe cheaper just to buy a cough syrup.

A simpler and natural cough medicine maybe just 1 tablespoon of honey three times a day. If your throat can stand it you can add fresh lemon juice.

Wow! It is a great alternative to medicine. It is more useful when hospital or drugstore are far from your town. I will try this homemade herbal coug drops. Because of the climate change, we always need something to prevent us to get sick. So maybe thinking some alternatives is a good way.

This is a great recipe and all those herbs are super good for your throat and therefore help with cough. That's what you should take before you go to the doctor because it's a great natural recipe. I'd add sage which I use for my throat too sometimes.

Mhm very interesting, I should try it when I will get cold. I am living in USA ( New York) but my family is from Eastern Europe ( Ukraine and Russia ) mothers line. When they catch a cold , they drink a kind of vodka ( I am not sure what it is exactly, it is not a clear vodka, like a mixture with honey and other elements). I know that now we live in a hard time because of Coronavirus and for our safety I recommend to wear N95 face masks and medical gloves in public places.
