One of the things that I loved doing when I was cross stitching was using two, three and even four strands of embroidery thread while cross stitching or doing other embroidery or needlepoint work. The end result was always a more textured result, that was lovely to see and feel. The thread colors can even be intermixed to create unique color patterns on the embroidered surface.

And, did you have trouble pushing or pulling the needle and thread through the fabric? Also, what type of fabric were you using for this project?

At the time, I was using cross stitch fabric as it's more stiff and easy to work with for embroidery. I have tried other fabrics, but for me it's always harder to make the finished work look as I want it. You could likely embroider on any surface you want.

I agree Beverly. I like the thicker look. It looks more pronounced.

This textured technique worked especially well on some type of designs. For instance, when embroidering a dog pattern, you can create the look of fur by leaving a loop of thread above the surface rather than pulling it taught. It's a very nice 3D type needlework, very free form and forgiving.

Yes I agree. When I was first starting cross stitching, I had to have a lot of forgiveness! It was easy work but sometimes it just did not look the best.

Starting out, I always pulled my thread too tight and it would bunch or mar the fabric in some way. It took me a very long time to learn to relax while doing cross stitch.

Multi embroidery (cross stitch) threads gives such a luxurious feel to the stitched pattern. I love working like this as it's dimensional and gives me a unique craft item that no one else has.

And, what type of fabrics would this technique work on? Can you only use this on cross stitch fabric or would you be able to use on a sweat shirt? If so, please give tips for how this would be done.

For sure as there is less white space showing through from the cross stitch fabric.

Can you please post a video on how this technique is done? I have tried using the multiple threads but always get my threads tangled. Can you mix the thread colors or should you stick to just one color thread?

This sounds like a really good technique.

My grandmother also taught me how to cross stitch though I was never as good at it as other crafts. I am still trying to perfect my needle technique so that I don't get crooked stitches.

It has been a long while since I did any real embroidery, but when I used to do that, I used two strands of the embroidery thread usually. I enjoyed making pillowcases that had embroidery on them, and the little matching crochet edging.
Now that I do not see as well, I usually just make things that I can use a larger crochet hook with, and knit items like socks or slippers.
I have done a little embroidery with yarn on a knitted or crocheted item, but you have to use a much larger needle to embroider with the 4-ply yarn.
I still have quite a lot of embroidery thread, and maybe this winter, I will start another project.

Using a varieties of stuff on a thing gives it a unique looks it just like combining different cloth when sewing it helps makes the style more glamour and chic.I totally agree with you. Using different threads would be cool.
