Why using laser light toys are a bad idea when playing with your cat

Here's a really fascinating article that claims using laser light toys are a really bad idea when playing with your cat. The theory is that laser light toys don't provide the cat with satisfaction that natural in the wild hunting would, as they can hunt the light but never capture it. And, this can lead to frustration and possible feline OCD behavior where the cat is obsessed with any flickering light.

If you are a cat lover, this article is worth reading.

The only ones enjoying the laser light toys are usually the cat owners who delight in watching their cat bounce around and jump off the walls. But, this type of behavior does not mimic actual hunting, which is more stealthy to fit the cat's smaller body type and lung capacity. To be humane, it's just best to avoid such toys.

thanks Beverly. Interesting news there. I would have to say that I have been guilty of playing with a laser with my cats but I have never pointed it in their eyes and we only use it for a short amount of time.

I also use laser lights to play with my cats before, but because I do it often, I think they grew tired of it because they don't chase it anymore. So now I just use laser light to play with stray cats haha. I have laser light keychain and whenever I see stray cats outside, I try to play with them using it. It's just so fun to see cats running round and around. Why using laser light toys are a bad idea when playing with your cat

Beverly I'm not surprised that this useful information came from you, basically, you are the best cat person I've come to know ever since I started freelancing.

This would be a great useful piece of information for all the cats lover out, although I'm not one, I prefer dogs more but I definitely will be taking the Intel to my grandmother who is also a cat woman as well. She has 7 cats at the moment and still thinking of getting more.

Well, thanks for the information. I have to confess, I always play with a laser light and cats, whenever I have the chance. The other bad thing about it, is that the cat focus on the light, and more often than not, doesn't pay attention to his environment. That's why the cats can get hurt while chasing the light, and I've seen kind of bad accidents with this playing. Well, I guess I better stop the laser light option, don't want my neighbor's cat gets OCD hahaha.

Using laser light toys to play with a cat is fun. But I think it's not good in some aspects. Playing with your cat using laser light toys inside your house may cause some accidents. Maybe your cat can destroy things while following the light or they will come directly to you and put some scratch on you. In short, it may cause harm to you.

As a cat lover myself this is a very valuable information. Though I never once tried those lasers for our playtime, I never thought that cats could have OCD's. We use to play with a crumpled paper at the end of a make up fishing rod. I will always keep in mind to let them sprint and capture their prey in our playtime.
