Traditional Holiday Drink: Who Wants Egg Nog?

2018 has been a busy but fantastic year for me. Hoping the trend continues and 2019 will be even busier and better!  That being said, it's another "most wonderful time of the year".  I live in the USA and this is my favorite time of the year. Even without the gift shopping.  It's just a jolly time and I enjoy the traditions.

There is one tradition, however, that I did not start off enjoying.  It's probably because when I first tasted this drink, I was just a kid.  You know how kids are.  They have both expectations and suspicions when trying new things.  So the new thing I was going to be trying was a drink called eggnog.

Everybody else (I mean, all the older people) were raving about eggnog.  For one of my brothers, this drink was like a specialty.  Per my mom, he made it really well.

Naturally, I was curious about the taste.  But my first taste was rather a shock!  LOL.  I don't know what I was expecting but I wasn't expecting that!  It was sort of creamy and had spices in it and ... I don't know what else!  Anyway!  As I got older, let's just say I acquired a taste for it.

Come to find out people have different recipes for this drink.  Even though there are different ways to prepare it, when it comes to eggnog, there's a dividing line.  People either love it or hate it.

Which side of the dividing line are you on?
* Love it!
* Hate it!
* Never tried it!

It looks good but I dont know the taste like. Feels like I should try that one. I think it is worth trying.

I think it is. It's something that some people like while others don't. If you prefer a light drink, I recommend not adding any alcohol. It's usually the so called special ingredient of eggnog.

But really, a lot of people have come to like it after drinking the version without any alcohol in it.

Just the thought of the name is quite weird for me. I think it would be fun making it for the first time. I'm also curious how it will taste.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You can try watching tutorials on YouTube. It's actually simple to make. Though, the main ingredient that stands out is alcohol. So you might not want to add that to the mix. I've heard great stuff about alcohol free eggnog.

Alcohol? Wow! I am just going straight to YouTube to have a look and get to know if it is something I can easily prepare and even maybe how well I can nail it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's funny. Sounds like you're actually into drinking alcohol. Well, if it's something you like. Go for it. YouTube has practically become the modern tutorial guide for beginners.

There are lots of videos there about eggnog.

I want egg nog. I want to know how it tastes. We don't have it here in our country.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Well, you can Google the recipe for yourself. It's not that hard to make. Eggnog been a holiday drink for a while now. So everyone's familiar with it. Though, it's understandable that others have yet to taste it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I cannot say that I am an alcoholic but I do love me some beers and whiskey from time to time. This is why I was happy to read that the recipe had some alcohol.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Have you tried it? I hope you also got to try the one without alcohol. Most people say it's too sweet. But for me, it tastes amazing. I like the creamy taste. I also prefer to drink it cold.

From where I come from eggnogs are a kind of bread snack that you could buy from a store. As I was reading through your post I was thinking, maybe she had an accidental sip of a beer when she was a kid. I did not expect creamy and spices. Lol. Now I wonder what that taste like!

Interesting that egg nogs are something else entirely where you live! I love this forum since it gives me a really unique global perspective on things!

I feel the same. Its fun to learn new things from each member here. I never knew that there is an egg nog drink!

I agree with you. As I saw the title, the first thing that comes in my mind is why eggnog is included in this issue about drinks? I was surprised to know that there was a drink that have that name from other side of the world.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think I know what you're referring to. I remember seeing a convenience store snack named that. It had two flavors. One was color blue and was chocolate flavor. The other was yellow with plain egg taste. I prefer the chocolate version.

I'm almost ashamed I've never tried it, but I do want to! I just don't have the opportunity to try it! I did suggest it once but none of us here know how to make one from scratch and we don't know where to buy one. We just stick to hot cocoa every year Traditional Holiday Drink: Who Wants Egg Nog?

I'm on the "Never tried it" side, as I never did. But I'm curious now. Are they really that popular and delicious? I would love to try it. Looking on that picture makes me want to dive into it with my face, haha. For sure I'll buy it, and in fact, I'm gonna search online for it via shipping.

Honestly I have not trued it. Seen plenty of times in some cookery shows. And also seen the gordon ramsey did it. But to be honest you can see that egg nog is something I may have to try out on my own. It may give me understanding of that in such case. We don't have tradition of egg nog but if I were to do some DIY this year. I may have to try it out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Oh my gosh, the name of the drink is actually the same with the famous biscuit snack that we have here in the Philippines. I am quite curious how that looks and also its taste. Gotta search that up.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I grew up in the middle east where we were mostly exposed to Arabic and other cultures (since they had a lot of expats there as well) every time I'd hear someone say eggnog I always think of that biscuit. I'd always wonder, "Whyyy would anyone drink biscuits??" and also, "How did they manage to make it into a drink??" Lol! I was a silly child.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

burgosmichael24
Since I don't drink alcohol, I think I should go for eggnog biscuits/cookies for new year than the eggnog drink. Eggnog was my favorite snack since I was a child and even until now, I still crave for it.

Egg nog biscuits!. When I was younger, I used to eat egg nogs and served it as snacks when its recess. At first glance of this questionnaire, I thought its really an Egg Nog biscuits and now I just found out that they also have egg nogs but rather a drink.

I have never came across for such type of drinks because based on what I remember during my childhood times that egg nog is a typical biscuit or bread snacks which are cut into small pieces. I am not expecting that it has a similar product name from other places in the world. But I am quite amazed and curious on how does that product taste and on how much does it cost?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. I was also raised and great up thinking eggnogs are just our favorite buscuit snack. Who would have thought that it could also be a drink? I would be glad to get a glass of it someday.

Hahaha if you could only detail to us how it is prepared or if it had a recital maybe then those of us that have not yet had it may prepare and partake. Might be a nice thing for Christmas.

You can find very traditional recipes on YouTube, and some of them are super easy to make, with very common ingredients. Usually is made with egg yolks, milk, sugar, cloves, cinnamon, and rum. Some people also can add vanilla or nutmeg, some other flavor it with cocoa or coconut, but that depends on personal customs and preferences.

When I first saw this thread I thought what kind of a mystical food is that. Then we realize we do have it too! But under a different name, can you imagine that? It's called Gogolmogol here. It's very delicious, you can feel the sugar on your tongue.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ballyhara
Exactly. We also have our own version of it, and it's called Cream Punch. It is a traditional custom to make it on Christmas, and every family has it own particular way to make it. The tradition is to serve your own Cream Punch, whenever someone goes to your home to visit you on that season, so you can taste several recipes during the whole time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Hahahaha. Then I guess that we might also have the same just but a different name or method of preparation. Let me check on YouTube for the cooking bit.

Never has tried the traditional eggnog, so I can't say if I love it or hate it. However, we have our own version of it, and it's called cream punch, which is made with eggs, milk, rum, condensed milk, vanilla and cinnamon, and that one tastes delicious. So, I do love my traditional Christmas cream punch, and my sister makes one to die for, so that's one of my favorite drinks ever.

Traditional Holiday Drinks: Who wants eggnog?: I am kinda confuse when I read the topic which is about drink but that term is "eggnog". In our country the Eggnog is popular as one of the bread snacks that everyone didn't miss especailly in their childhood andbyeah it was also good and I love to eat it untill now but the drinks you called Eggnog, I want to try it also maybe it was good also.

Eggnog here in our place is not a drink. It is Little bread sticks that is wrapped and being sold in the grocery stores. I bought this as a snack in school for my kids.

It's a traditional Christmas beverage, it's made with egg yolks, sugar, rum, and milk. People add vanilla, cloves, and cinnamon to enhance the flavor. Not very sure how it tastes, because we have our own recipe here in my country, so I haven't taste the traditional one.

Egg nog is super popular here - there are tons of varieties at supermarkets and people even make their home made versions. I absolutely hate eggs though so it’s not something I’ve ever enjoyed!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I dont know eggnog but we love drinking veberages in christmas. But liquors would not be forgotten.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ballyhara
We also like to have and drink different beverages on Christmas. Besides our own version of eggnog (which we call cream punch), we tend to offer regular drinks like sodas, and different liquors like whisky, rum, vodka, gin. But we also like to prepare different kinds of fruity punch, we tend to mix wine and fruits, or maybe vodka, juice, and herbs, some other mix soda, liquor, and juice, so you have many options to please your guests during that season.

Sometimes I wonder why it didn't become a popular drink in my country. I mean we have an americanized society and all the American food chains are here, and the people love it. There's also a lot of Americans living here but Egg Nog never became popular. I think that maybe it has an acquired taste.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Yeah, I definitely think it's an acquired taste! I feel like it's about 50-50 in the people I know as to whether they like it or not. It's pretty easy to make at home if you have the right spices, so you could always look up a recipe online. But personally, I think there are much better drinks out there!

"I have never tried it", I don't know why but it didn't became a popular drink here. I know how to make it and my cousins who live in the states, would tell me stories about traditional U.S. drinks, one time we were drinking, one of them mixed up some eggnog but with a lot of liquor in it, well I didn't taste it because, to me eggs, milk and liquor don't really mix that well.

In the Philippines where I live, we usually drink hot chocolate and ginger tea during Christmas season. These drinks warms us up during cold nights and chilly mornings.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't like egg nog. At all. Here in America, it's very popular but I'm not a fan. My preferred Christmas drink is Apple Cider, Grape Apple Cider, Peach Apple Cider, Cherry Apple Cider, or Christmas punch. Which can be made by mixing ginger ale and fresh juices with fruits such as sliced oranges added for flavor.

Wow. Base on your description about eggnog, it seems that it's really great. I will look it up on google later.

In philippines we also have eggnog but it's not a drink but something to chew. It's like a baked biscuit and taste really good. I used to have it as my school snacks during grade school.

I think that during Christmas we always have a drinking season together with my friends and family to celebrate Christmas with full of joy and happiness. We always drink some beer such as Red Horse which is a typical beer that has a high volume of alcohol content which can easily make us drunk and of course perfect partner for singing at the karaoke machine. To make the celebration more happier and longer we drink Red horse beer to make it more interesting very enjoying.

Never tried it. Eggnog is not that popular in my country. Back here, for Christmas, it's often alcohol for adults and sodas for kids, or maybe some fruit juice. I'll like to try the eggnog though. Looks yummy. I hope my taste buds won't be disappointed. It'd be a shame to not like something that looks that good.

I have never tried it. The only eggnog we have here is a brand for biscuits. According to your description, it's kind of dislikable but I still want to try it if I have a chance. I am very curious how that creamy taste would go well with the spices and stuff not to mention it is a drink and not a sauce or something.

Now how are we going to get this drink? I have never seen it in our supermarkets. Are they on eBay?

You can order eggnog on Amazon. I checked and saw the American brand called "Borden". We used to buy that brand when I was a kid. I hear some people say eggnog has alcohol. But it doesn't come that way. People add it! You don't have to drink with alcohol. No matter what anybody says is the recipe, you can take any alcoholic drink and make it a virgin drink.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Me too. Eggnog seems like the kind of drink you'd like to try despite how it's described. I just don't like it. Maybe it's the alcohol mixed with the sweet taste. There are better drinks out there.

Your comments are not uncommon. As I said, there is a clear dividing line. In my house, only one of my kids really likes eggnog. The rest of them and my husband have no enthusiasm about it at all. I can go either way. But now that I found out I could make desserts with eggnog, I'm thinking about it in a new light. I have never tried an eggnog dessert.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's nice of you to share. Would that still contain alcohol? If you were to make an eggnog dessert, maybe you can skip the alcohol ingredients. That's what I'd do if I were to make one.

Now you have me looking into it. Thankfully, we have Google for that.

I also love Christmas. I don't think that my year has been that great, but I'm looking forward to the holiday season and am looking forward to 2019, I think that this is my year of becoming. I'm not a fan of eggnog. In my Country thank God its not a christmas tradition. In my Country during Christmas we have straight up spirits and wine. No eggnog in my Country. I know that they are two versions of it alcoholic and non-alcoholic. If I had to choose I choose the alcoholic one the other one is just horrible.

I've never tried egg nog before. Maybe it's a thing in the west as I've only seen it in movies. I do find the combination to be a bit weird though. Raw egg, milk and booze in a drink? I think I'll pass.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's the offputting part for me. Raw eggs - gross! I just think it makes me feel nauseous, not to mention the risk for illness from things like salmonella. Big "no thanks" from me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
@ripzbeermoney Yes, it is a very big deal here in America. The mixing of booze into the nog is really just an excuse for heavy drinkers to get hammered to the tune of something sweet during a certain holiday season. Much like spiking the punch at a dance with vodka.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

rlpzbeermoney
Does the raw egg add any sort of flavor though? If people want to get hammered, then they could just take the alcohol straight or mix it with softdrinks. I understand the Japanese and Koreans eat raw egg but I don't understand America.

Well that is good to know that you are giving me some insight on how to make it because I would really give it a try so that my curiosity about it would be satisfied. I am interested for adding up an alcohol because it might be a good substitute from the beer that I am drinking during some important occasions.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

When you put it that way, it could be better than simply drinking beer. Just make sure to add as little alcohol as possible. That's the good thing about this drink. You're more focused on the creamy taste than getting drunk.
