Do You Use Cooking Blogs For Meal Ideas?

life
Do you use cooking or foodie blogs to get ideas or recipes for your home cooked meals or for entertaining others? There is so much information out there now regarding every kind of cuisine one could think of, so I am curious how you all take advantage of that, if you indeed do at all?

I am watching many youtube channels. And it seems to be helping me get better at cooking. So it all comes down to how you're doing the most out of it. Some of the time cooking works good enough. And some of the time cooking can be harder. So it all depends on things how you do them. I guess some people do cooking with traditional home made way. I guess that is simply the best way to learn.

I also just watch Youtube videos because that's way easier to follow since you could see exactly what is happening to the food while it is cooking, as opposed to getting the instructions from a cook book or a cooking blog where all you have to go on is the pictures of the results. It really does take a lot of practice to learn how to cook because along the way you'll need to figure out how best to measure everything from the ingredients to the amount of heat you'll need to use against different types of cookware in different situations.

Saltd is my favorite channel for making simple recipes at home. Though a lot of things are not easy for me to get. I have noticed that some of the time meals making through the youtube recipes. It does not always come out the way it is supposed to be as well. That's what we are supposed to consider a well.

I also watch cooking channels on YouTube. I also watch a lot of cooking shows on tv. I think I am more of a visual learner, so actually seeing someone else do it helps me a lot. Some of the shows are pretty funny too, especially the contest ones like Chopped.

I have always been intrigued by Chinese food, so I do watch lots of YouTube videos on how to prepare their meal, the ingredients needed and procedures used in its preparation. The most recent Chinese meal that I prepared after watching its YouTube video clip is Sesame Ginger Chicken. It's such a tasty meal.

Me too. I have interest in chinese, korean and japanese food too. So I make sure to learn from those recipes. A lot of time there are some of the dishes that I prefer to eat. And I watch how to make them over there. I have learned a lot of small skills in due process.

"I am watching many youtube channels. And it seems to be helping me get better at cooking."

I haven't been watching YouTube channels in particular, but I have been picking up on the latest "GIF recipe" craze going around right now. They're basically bite-sized instructional videos in GIF form that demonstrate dozens of unique and interesting recipes. You may have seen them on your social media. They're those GIFs/videos that are filmed from a top-down angle and just show the food and someone's hands working with them. You have to know the fundamentals of cooking of course, as it isn't a step by step instructional video, but I think it is great for ideas.

I know those short recipes shown on the instagram and facebook. i think those are good. But often those are just hacks. And not a tasty cooking to be honest. For example adding the egg on the top of the boiled noodles will just make up for the boiled recipe and may not always test good enough.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
"But often those are just hacks."

Yeah, you're definitely right. More often than not they're simple cooking hacks or just something ridiculously out of this world that no one would really want to make. I'd say that a good 80% of those GIF recipes aren't really recipes that I'd even want to try out.

However, I can't deny that there are times I come across some really good stuff. You can check out the site Reddit, and visit their subreddit /r/GifRecipes. Since Reddit is a community site where you upvote and downvote stuff, you're mostly going to find actually good quality recipes at the top.

Yeah, youtube is enough for all the things that I want to learn since there are a lot of quality channels for anything, and there are also available recipes from actual chefs like Gordon Ramsay which is really great because you learn while watching them do the cooking.

No, but I think I should because I enjoy reading recipe articles as well as trying new recipes. I love cooking, actually, cooking is one of my favorite ways to relax, have fun and spend quality time. I find cooking very therapeutic.
I have never tried to follow the recipes I read in a blog, however, recently I downloaded recipe apps and these days I am trying some of the recipes from these apps.

Yes, not just the blogs but also the sites and especially the YouTube channels that are related to that purpose. It's an endless world of recipes and combinations (some combinations I would never have imagined doing by myself, haha).

It's really fun to get into this world, haha. Do You Use Cooking Blogs For Meal Ideas?

wiseagent,
I use those Youtube channels as well. However, I am not sure if you have heard about this one or not, but I came across one called EPIC MEAL TIME. These guys are insane and sure to die any day from heart failure. For example, on one episode, they made lasagna out of 17 Big Macs...and other sundry ingredients. Suffice it to say, I do not prescribe to any of their recipes, lol. I like looking up traditional recipes and finding new takes on them to switch things up in my side dishes and other cooking ideas.

If you have a cooking hobby, definitely you would always makes use of cooking sites and YouTube videos to get more knowledge on foods that you never knew existed before. One can be amazed by the amount of quality information online on food recipes and those that source it are always good at cooking exceptional dishes.

I have noticed that some of the quick food or the breakfast recipes are lot easier to cook. And some recipes may not always be that bad. I have seen some celeb recipes and the methods being shared. So yeah it can be good on that point.

I pick up recipes from magazines and websites or forum sites. I realized that mothers who really cook at home could express themselves well online. They can tell you what is missing in flavor and answer questions about cooking problems, it is just like the key that matches the padlock

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think the forum based sites are also good for discussing the recipes. I know some of such forums where the articles may come in. And this means things would be better for those who share. I think on that note you can see how the meal ideas are learned easily among people.

I occasionally come across new cooking or meal ideas and recipes. But do I actively search cooking blogs for ideas? Probably only when I want to do something different or new with a holiday meat - or am looking to cook a dessert I can no longer buy at the store. As it's been discontinued. It's not a habit though - I was taught how to cook very well by my parents at a young age.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I sometimes use the cooking blogs and even the youtube videos for some new recipe. Sometimes it is hard to get all the ingredients and so I postpone the new recipe or find substitutes. I do not use cooking blogs on a daily but on holidays when I have more time to learn and cook a new dish.

Typically, I get an idea of what I want to make and then search for it. Even if it is something that I think I made up in my head. I'll do a search, and typically at least one person has already thought of it and created a recipe.

I am a lot like you in this respect. Also, I sort of half remember recipes which I have cooked before, so I use the web to refresh myself in terms of how to prepare certain meals. I do have an old recipe notebook passed down in my family, but there is so much to learn about cuisine out there, and I have encountered so many new food cultures because of the media and the web, so i do go online a lot to experiment with mew things or to augment techniques and dishes which I already "kind of" know, if that makes sense.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Baburra
Not really. I usually just watch videos because at least then you could just follow along and you could actually see the food getting made as opposed to just relying on text and pictures. However, sometimes food video blogs will often link to their own written blogs for the complete measurements and only then will I go visit a blog for the rest of the information. I personally would prefer if they would just put it all on the video or at least below in the description, but I understand that they have to make a living and get some traffic for their site.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
Right--it is easier to follow along to the videos as you go and you can also pause at certain points in case you get behind or whatever. I always hope that the dish is going to turn out looking like it does in the video or the blog photos, but sometimes, I am not so fortunate or I make a misstep or two in the process. In any case, the videos would probably my preference as well--I am also pretty addicted to the Food Network as well, in terms of regular media. There are so many sources out there now on the web to look to for food and cooking that I think that anyone could most likely learn how to be a good cook if they really want to and put their mind to it.

I do but not all the time, I actually love using menu or getting meal ideas on magazines and also watching some videos on YouTube rather than using or looking up something on some food blogs. And also for me, watching someone cooked meals makes it more exciting and interesting and you'll see the quick or actual results of whether it's failed or not.

Yes youtube seems to be much better source. And it can add up lot better for the blog ideas in many ways. I think many people should check out the cooking blogs. And that is one skills that we all need to have as well. There's plenty of things to learn from those skills.

Certainly, I get some of my recipe from foodie blog especially my native food that has a different recipe from what I know.I have learned a lot of my recipe from the blogs.

If one has an event and doesn't need the services of chefs or event planners, I think the best bet is to search online for some party recipe.Follow the recipe strictly and Viola, a nice meal would have been prepared for the guests.

Yes i do read or watch blogs online for cooking food to eat but not always because i have some ideas got from my parents. I actually visit the page "Foodie Goodie" where in there are popular food that shows all the step by step and ingredients that are used. The thing also why i love the page is that there are lots of FIlipino foods which makes me proud of. I learned a lot from the page and all cooking style that are new from the blogs. You can share your recipes in the page by posting it. I am planning to have a mini restobar where in some of the served food are learned from blogs in internet.

I have not heard of "Foodie Google" yet, so I will check that out myself. What is the concept behind the "restobar"? I've never heard of this term before. yes, most of the recipes that I know are the recipe blogs that I follow. Sometimes I do use the blogs, but the reasons that I do use one is usually when I am looking for a certain kind of recipe, and the search engine turns up a blog post in the search results, I do not follow any blogs specifically to find their recipes.
I do try to follow a ketogenic eating plan, so sometimes I am apt to get email notices from some of the main websites that feature this diet , and I will then check out the new recipes that they post.
I also look on Youtube for recipes when there is something specific that i want to make and need a recipe for. Once I find the recipe, then i can just take my iPad into the kitchen, set it up and follow the recipe. I like that much better than having a whole recipe book to look through for a recipe.

My friend has a cooking blog with tested recipes and I always try to get some ideas from her blog. Whenever I can't decide what to cook I just go on her blog and browse through the recipes. There is step by step instructions on her blog and since I am a novice when it comes to cooking those instructions do help me. I also look for recipes on other pages/blog from time to time.

Damn, that's pretty nice! And yeah, I always look for a recipe with a step to step instructions. Now just because I'd be a beginner in cooking but because certain dishes require the little steps as well and just a few main ones. It's very cool to have a friend that deals with it though since if you ever run out of ideas you could also just ring her up and ask her!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I've frequented blogs like this, and that's what inspired me to start this thread. I think that this kind of idea for a blog is great because of the interaction a recipe can create in terms of people's comments to one another on the blog. Also, your friend's idea of providing detailed instructions and recipes, etc. is a great one, and i think that is so smart to do so. I would frequent a blog like this, and I bet your friend most likely gets a good bit of traffic.

Yes I do. Sometimes I have to look for a new recipe that I really dont know how to prepare or cook. Food recipe on blogs can really be helpful when I want to learn new dishes too, either it is native or from the other country. Sometime I also watch

just beginning to cook.

It's quite handy because people invent so many delicious recipes - you can make everyday meals much more exciting.

As a matter of fact, I do! Within the past couple months, my housemate and I made the agreement that we would each pick one day of the week and cook dinner for the house. I've never been one to cook, so this has been an excellent exercise for in honing what little culinary skills I have.

I'll generally rotate between several different blogs to find what meal I'm going to cook each week. I like that the blogs I follow tend to keep the recipes pretty simple, and they have easy to follow directions, which is a must for someone like me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I think that is a really cool idea to do with your housemate--I have a roommate as well, and I might suggest this to her as something we could do to be more social. Our personal and professional schedules keep us separated most of the time, and we have been friends for years, so this might be an excuse for us to sit down and have at least two meals a week. I use youtube a lot too to get recipes, but I have found some good blogs out there too. I generally figure out what kind of cuisine I want and then go from there, researching dishes and tastes in that particular genre of food.

Not really. I don't really any cooking blogs at all, to be honest with you. The only time I have ever read a cooking-based blog was to find a recipe for a chocolate cake. I tend to get quite a lot of meal ideas from the cooking shows that I watch though on the Food Network. A lot of the food that they showcase on the various channels just look amazing and it makes me want to make them.

Yes, I use cooking blogs and vlogs. To stay healthy and trim I stick strictly to a low carb diet. This get's boring as there is only so much you can do with protein and vegetables. To get different ideas I follow a number of food blogs. I follow a few local ones and a few international ones. I get plenty of ideas on how to make meals for me and my family.

Cooking blogs are also useful as we approach the holidays. I like to make changes to traditional holiday meals like turkey and eggnog. Guess where I go for ideas? Yes, food blogs!

There are so many ways to have an idea about cooking meals. I try to look on some magazines and videos to have meal ideas. Also I see some in facebook or even instagram and twitter. Cooking blogs is also nice in searching some meal ideas. You could read to it how the blogger cook that very well. They are quite useful so, yes I do. What I like them is that they are properly organized, you can easily find nice recipes with suiting pictures in a format that allows you to look at any recipe in no time and understand it properly. If you go looking for recipes on other sites that are not blogs, it takes more time to find what you need and it's probably going to be formatted in a way that makes you read a lot about it. I mean you can also find longer posts on blogs too, but there's both.

Yes I do because I am a huge fan of chicken and I am always looking for new ways to make chicken and you would not believe all the different ways you can make chicken. My wife found this one recipe that involves cutting up the chicken and making rice and then making this sauce for the rice. And then you mix up the check and rice and sauce and it's to die for. I have never tasted anything like it before and I am so glad that she found it on that cooking blog.

P.S. I am always checking cooking blogs for stuff for her to make LOL!

I'm not sure if it's the same thing but my mum actually does something quite similar and it really is something I would die for lol. It just takes so nice and it's unbelievable. If I could, I would happily have it every day. I tend to just watch cooking shows to get my ideas, a lot of the things some cooks do with chicken just give me a lot of ideas.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
True--I guess that chicken really is a very diverse source of protein. There are hundreds of ways to prepare it, and I think that it can really take on many different flavors as the meat absorbs the spices. The main thing, I think, is making sure that, when you cook it, you do not dry it out. I really like the chicken casserole dish that my mom makes with broccoli and a creamy sauce. Cooking chicken on the grill is also delicious, and I like when I get a good sear on the meat and when the skin is nice and crispy.

I suppose I do in an indirect sort of way.

I don't ever stick to one source when it comes to cooking recipes. The way it typically goes is that something happens to strike my fancy, I google a recipe for it, and then I sift through the links to find which one appeals to me the most.

Often times I'll end up taking a recipe from someone's blog, because bloggers seem to be more open-minded and experimental about their cooking, while official sites are very "by the books."

The "off the books" nature of cooking blogs also has its downsides though, the main one being that you often have to scroll through someone's entire life story and filler stuff before you get to the actual recipe. I get that it is necessary when writing for a blog, but it adds no value to the experience for me as I'm just there to learn how to cook something.

I don't cook often but I like to bake cakes and ALL cakes I have ever baked I made because I've found an interesting recipe on the internet. My hat is off to you if you are a good baker! I think that, in many ways, the pastry chef has the toughest job of all. The recipes are a pretty exact science, from what I understand, and you really have to stick to the proper amounts of each ingredient. I love cheesecake, and my girlfriend makes a great multi-colored one that always gets lots of oohs and ahhs. I think I once thought that I could learn to do anything just by watching a Youtube video, but I think that there is a real art and craft to baking, so I leave that to the experts.

Bloggers' recipes can also be found there and it is really helpful. The best part of the food recipes there is that the nutritional facts are specific and for those who are really counting their macro-nutrients, it's a good app. I sometimes use recipes from Tasty too. Yes I do watch blogs especially in YouTube for some recipes that I want to try. It really helps a lot to me because I can do and cook it step by step. I always watch “Panlasang Pinoy “blog for Philippine recipes. It is indeed delicious and easy to understand the procedure and ingredients are easily found. It is advantage to people like me that not expert in cooking because it will help people like me to try some dishes that will surely love my family.

I have not ever experimented with Philippino food, but I am interested in it because of some travel shows and blogs which I have seen. The limited experience I have with it seems to suggest that pork is a prominent protein and that there are some interesting ways to prepare pork there which most Americans are not that familiar with. I would like to learn more cooking techniques which are not so Western and to expand my horizons, and since I do not have the budget or time to travel, learning things about cooking online is the way for me to go.

It seems, as you mention here, that the Youtube videos are the most popular options when it comes to getting assistance with our cooking and food preparation. But then even if I copy all the steps, sometimes the taste I think differs. So what I do, I just make sure that it looks good and it taste good according to my preference. I like using simple ingredients also. I recently saw an advertisement for Hienekken beer. it supposedly only has THREE ingredients. If you can put only THREE ingredients into a dish and make it appealing, then I think that speaks to your cooking technique and your appreciation of the ingredients and their innate potential. Being able to take very little and make it taste very good and bigger than the sum of its parts is a true talent, I think.

Your ideas are what you can simply refer to as your niche which can be turned into a thriving online business. Blogs can be created about anything you do or know. It doesn't matter that you should follow or imitate other people before you can create an idea. For a meal idea, a blog can be created instantly and a large audience can be generated on that niche.

You make a good point about not having to follow someone else's recipe exactly, and you also make a good point that we can personalize or specialize any of the things we learn from videos, vlogs, or blogs online. I think it's good to personalize things for yourself and to get into things on your own level of creativity and comfort.

No, I don't.

I do look at cooking blogs and cooking videos. However, that's mainly for fun. I just like to see what other people can cook up, so to speak. For myself, I have my own recipes. Basically, I specialize in one-pot meals. Everything is done in just one pot.

I do from time to time. Most of the time, I end up browsing through Pinterest for recipe ideas. Lots of the time what I find there leads me to a blog. Other times, I will see something posted on a friend's Facebook page that looks yummy, and it is attached to a blog page. I really don't actively follow many blogs myself though.

Sometimes while ole following recipes I find online, I find they aren't as flavourful as I would like them to be, so I need to make adjustments to them. If it end up being a dish that the whole family really liked, I make a copy and usually add notes about what I did differently. My husband and I actually have a couple binders (2-3" binders) full to bursting with recipes we have tried. Many are from random webpages, some blogs, for specific dishes we looked up after seeing something on a TV cooking/food show. Others were happened upon by chance when searching for a specific type of cuisine. Many have been written on, either with our own person rating of the dish, or else what we would change for next time.

We also have binders full of recipes, some of which have been passed down for generations in our families. We also have a few containers full of note cards full of recipes as well. I like collecting these and pulling them out and making the meals old school. Some of the recipes are tried and true, and some of them we still experiment with from time to time. We make adjustments on ours, as well, just like you do. We use blogs and videos with our traditional recipes by looking up the recipe and seeing how others do it, or how to make the recipe healthier, or vegetarian, etc.

I love cooking a lot, the idea of cooking blogs is actually a nice one, especially the ones that gets to be linked with YouTube so you will get to watch how they do it. So many people don't like the idea of cooking blogs but I do, for Christ Sam how do people expect us to get all those receipes in our head without going to the net, cooking blogs put much insights on how some food should be prepared without you going through the stress of calling your mother or an old relative for recipes.

I know how to cook because of cooking blogs I don't have to memorize it all, no body taught me how to cook I learn myself through cooking blogs, all I just did that day was go to the grocery stores get my food stuffs and follow the guidelines, everyone complimented on the foods I make without spotting issues. Cooking blogs also helps people abroad and over to learn other intercontinental dishes, cooking books are there but cooking blogs are much more easier to use, it doesn't mean you are a lazy woman or not a wife material but it mean you are just being creative.

I've certainly used and read some I think a year ago because of some circumstances that made me a cook for my co-workers when one of my co-workers who cooks had to quit the office work because of an incident which I do cannot understand. Most of the time when I cook is I tend to randomize all the recipes that I currently know how to cook but sometimes most of us tend to get tired of the same recipes each week. That was time when I've look for other recipes online, read and learn some and also downloaded a recipe app that time to add on our list. Its funny as most of the meals are quite easy to cook supposedly you have the ingredients ready for you. And yes looking for the right and fresh ingredients are quite hard the good thing is I have someone who knows how to select the best ingredients on the market, which turns out to be my girlfriend. Do You Use Cooking Blogs For Meal Ideas?

I usually know what meals to prepare for special occasions but I still turn to cooking blogs to see if there are ways to improve or twist the recipes. I prefer to read blogs for this purpose because I already have an idea how to make the dish. Of course, videos and cooking shows are better if one wants to learn how to cook. I find them slow, though, and I don't have much time to watch. I think that Pinterest is a good site to check when looking for meal ideas.

Yes I do, cooking blogs and vlogs are great tools that helps me learn new recipes, ingredients, food preparation and cooking techniques of different countries.

Most of the time the ingredients being used are not available due to geographic location. So what I do is I substitute the ingredients with what's available locally and the dish always taste great.

Most of the time! I learned most of the recipes I know from cooking blogs. It was very helpful! Everything is detailed so it is kinda easy to follow the steps and the result is just exactly the same as what expected.

I do, but probably not as often as I should given my lack of creativity in the kitchen. I am sure that I have intended to in the past and will tell myself again to do so but who knows. I do use some websites but they are not really purely cooking blogs but maybe I need to expand and see what else is out there.

I often felt like I was not creative in the kitchen, so I started using blogs and Youtube videos to spark my cooking skills, and, after a while, these videos and blogs rubbed off on me, and I began to feel the freedom to create with my own culinary ideas in the kitchen! There's so much food-oriented content on the Internet that it is practically insane and impossible to keep up with. I would suggest picking a certain genre of food you like, French cooking, Asian, Mexican, Thai, whatever, and then diving into it that way to learn and to have fun with your food--not that you don't already do so, but that's what I did, and i found it quite rewarding...

Before cooking blogs and videos are trending, i usually use recipes and cooking books for tips and instructions. The problem with recipes specially the ones that are from product box or labels are they are very instructional ....or boring. I have been into cooking blogs and videos for quite sometime and it worked for me very well. Videos and blogs are more raw and very informative, it's actually the closest to real life. Cooking with fun is a great way to relieve stress and actually promotes an active lifestyle.

I sometimes get meal ideas from sites like this. Cooking blogs are interesting. They show you the life of another person and how their food positively influences their life.

Yes. I enjoy cooking blogs. However, my daughters use Pinterest and my husband uses YouTube. They're all good!

I am a complete Foodie and I love to eat and prepare various kinds of dishes. Food blogs can be very important and useful when you want to prepare recipes from other countries. A good food blog will provide all the information required to make a dish, right from the different kind of ingredients required to prepare the dish to how to serve a particular dish.I think reading food blogs can definitely be very useful to everyone who loves to prepare food, right from the professionals to newbies.

My creative side manifests in cooking.I love to cook, And I believe that I cook really well. This is one of the areas in life, that creativity has come to me without effort. I can come up with a receipe in a flash and most of the time it tastes amazing.I'm not really a fan of blogs, these days because it takes too long to go through them. I prefer watching cooking videos on Youtube. Once in a while, when I can't find what I'm looking for on Youtube, I do look at blogs.
