Hand made VS Mass produced crafts

I'm a little bit disappointed on how some people value handmade crafts. They are people who be little handmade products because they see it as flaws or inconsistent in design. I always try to explain to them that these products are not machine made and the artistry and skills behind it is valuable. But of course, i could not blame them because the fact that hand made products are more pricey they are also limited in terms of production. I just wish that people appreciate products specially those who are made by indigenous people.  Their products are excellent and has soul at least in my eyes...

I love Artisan Products, most handmade products specially leather ones are tough and sewn better than commercially made ones. Although it's always a lot more expensive than mass produced products it's well worth buying if one could afford it.

I am a minimalist and seldom buy things. For example, I only own four pairs of shoes: Formal, exercise shoes, semi-formal and slip on. I semldom buy things Instead, I invest and save money. I don't really mind if hand made products are more expensive. Whenever I buy things, I prefer hand made products produced by the locals. That way, I can support local business when I patronize their products. There is nothing wrong with massed produced but I prefer hand made products.

I love handmade products too. Its expensive because of the price of labor and raw materials. You are right in saying that crafts that are massed produced are cheaper than the one that is hand made. Mass produced crafts are machine made.

There is a lot of meaning in hand made crafts. The passion of the persons making it can be felt. Their effort in making that can be highly appreciated. Just try to imagine what are the factors involved in the making of those crafts.

I was about to say it but then I saw that you had already said it. There is a huge demand for Artisan products. There is such a large market for handmade goods that Amazon set aside a specific category on their website for handmade products. Handmade stuff is big business!

I love homemade things because it looks special and unique, besides homemade things are done with passion and love.

That's the reason why it's expensive sometimes, and aside from the quality and uniqueness, you will somehow attach to the person who made the product, and sometimes, it's looks like it's very hard for them to sell their products because they made this using their own hand.

That's absolutely true, That the only thing mass produced products can't do. The value of time if effort is always considered on our daily lives and handmade products are one of those things that has full of them.

Exactly! Home made crafts takes passion, creativity, commitment and dedication to successful produce the craft to be in an adorable form. Getting to seat for hours and possibly some days before getting one's home made craft done shows the commitment that is attached to home made crafts, it's the reason why they are very important and well valued.

Yes, same for me as well. I choose hand made because it is more better and it is something special because they created it with their passion. I also look for the quality of the product and handmade is I think better when it comes to the quality and uniqueness.

Hand made crafts are unique because there's no two that is exactly alike, it could look alike but it's not 100 percent the same. So buying a hand made craft is like buying something that is created for you only and there's no copy of it anywhere else, now that adds to its value.

That's one thing that matters when we are talking about the crafts made with hands. You get to have that type of crafts that is unique and special for you as the way that you like it.

I agree, plus there's the time and effort that goes into the production of something handmade. The process isn't done by a line of machines, it's usually someone's very own two hands crafting it for you.

The absolutely true, the value in it is with the process of creation. It's when human expertise and craftsmanship are used to create a product. It's when you put value to human and its abilities.

Being handmade doesn’t have the same connotations as it once used to. With sites like Etsy, eBay, and the ability to open personal Amazon shops, handmade products are going to vary when it comes to quality. The term handmade used to be associated with quality and value, but now that anyone with an internet connection can sell stuff, that association has been lost.

Honestly, I prefer slightly more expensive mass-produced crafts as they have better quality control. I'm not one to care much for the argument that handmade crafts each have a unique quality to them. What some see as "unique" I see as a defect.

That's the problem about the handmade products, the price is a little expensive compare to machine, but the think I like about the handmade, it's really unique, and can't find any similar to their works and this is the reason why I really love to buy the handmade products.

Certainly, they tend to be more expensive than the ones made by machines, but you know that usually, the ones produced on mass don't have the same quality, or the design tends to be annoyingly repetitive. I spent quite some time looking for a sweater, a knitted one, and all the stores I went to, had kind of the same design over and over again. What did I do? Invested my money in a hand made sweater, original design, quality wool, made for me with a lot of effort and care. God bless those hands.

Seriously, I'm all in for hand made crafts because they are more classy and comes with a touch of nature and human quality. Personally, I'm one of the advocators for hand made crafts to command expensive price because it takes more diligence and skills to produce one. Paintings and beads are my favorite hand made crafts.

Personally I prefer home made, one of a kind products because it's something unique, one of a kind and made just for me. Although one of a kind items are quite pricey at times because of its craftsmanship and quality, to me its well worth it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Exactly. Home made craft are a lot more harder and classy because it requires great skull and expertise to have such jobs done. I'm not good with my favorite hand made or home made crafts which is paintings but I'm actually good with one and it's beads making. I can make both bangles, earrings and necklace with different colors of beads and I sell them for a decent price as well.

When it comes to pottery, leather products like bags and belts, metalware and ornaments, hand crafted or hand made products are the best. It has superior quality that makes it very durable and it can really withstand years of use. Also handcrafted products have a good resale value, at times it even appreciates over time, unlike commercially machine produced items which has a cheaper resale value.

That's true some handmade or handcrafted products are collectibles specially those who do designs in traditional crafts. People that still do traditional crafts are declining that's why their products are more valuable than before.

Mass produced products are the norm nowadays because it's easily produced in bulk and by using machines it's cost is cheaper than hand crafted products. Although most mass produced, machine made products does suffer from quality issues, people buy it because it's cheap and are always available. Unlike hand made products that can be hard to find sometimes and expensive.

I love handmade products specifically because they’re all unique and perfectly imperfect. I think that’s part of the charm - anything can be mass produced but handmade items have heart and soul put into them. I try and buy handmade whenever I can because I love supporting small businesses too.

I have the same perspective, when you are buying handmade products you are also helping small business and keeping tradition alive. There are handmade products that are made by indigenous people using traditional methods. This methods sometimes involve spiritual practice and processes that are unique.

I think it depends on the product and the way it has been produced really. Just because it has been handmade does not make it a great product and better than something that was mass produced. Certain mass produced products are great and of the highest quality because the factory has been run well and they have high standards.

I will be biased on this since I also sell my hand made products so I would choose it over mass produced crafts. Apart from supporting artisan to earn, I believe that products which are hand made have unique touches on it. Hours spent to finish the item making sure that every detail is the same as each one. Handmade items are more often than not different from other products because it came from the idea of the maker.

Handmade products for me are special. These crafts are use to express the heart and soul of a person. It is their way of expressing themselves and identity. In my country, we have different tribes and they have handmade crafts that they specialize in. It is related to their culture and history. I find this products amazing and unique. You can definitely see the hard work people put in these products. I appreciate them more than mass produced products.

Handmade items are more expensive than machine made ones because machines generally reproduces the exact item in less time to make handmade or handcrafted ones. Another point is durability most handmade items are more durable because of the quality of craftsmanship the artisan has. Also handcrafted items tends to be unique, which adds to its price.

Yeah, the value is really from the way and how it is made. Also there's also an appreciation on labor and the skills in making it that's why it's much more expensive. It's something machine's can't do, the value of people making it by hand.

I agree with you! I had this friend who made purses from plastic wrappers. I watched her do it many times but I still couldn't get it and even if I learn how to do it, it would take time for me to make it as perfect as she did. People need to realize that in every handmade product was a story. A hand that needed to move fast and ignore muscle pain just to make sure they make enough to sell to feed their families. Just because it is not perfect and it is not made by machines doesn't mean it's of less value. I think they should be valued more.

Yeah, its the human in it is what i think is valuable. Usually the method's are made through years of experienced and maybe passed on through generations. It's cultural in value and these things are endangered of being extinct because of industrialization.

Handmade products are extraordinary. These are the products created with effort and love by individuals. It should be more expensive since it takes to finish a handmade product. Every piece of craft deserves appreciation. I also believe that handmade products are more durable compared to the products made by a machine.

When it come to good quality handmade products stand out. I love hand made one because of their unique looks and also I can rest assured that it will last long. Handmade products are mostly found at souvenir shops, some are a little bit pricey but that's okay, we know that handmade products take time to be finish unlike those that are made by machines.

Yeah that's the only disadvantage of handmade products, the skills and creativity invested into it makes it more pricey. I also think that material is one of the reasons why it's much more expensive. Most of the material used in handmade products are processed specially when they are made from natural materials.

I definitely agree with your statement. Handmade products have good quality. They can last longer since too much effort was exerted for finishing the products. They may be more expensive but the price is worth it.

I like handmade products more because it has more quality but it is more expensive. Mass produced craft has low quality but it is cheaper. Well, I think it all the depend on the kind of product I am buying and my budget for the product. If I'm going to buy for a dress I prefer a handmade product so I can make sure for the quality of the dress. I will go for mass produced craft if I'm just going to buy a handkerchief.

I appreciate hand made products because it is not just about the product itself but also the effort of the person who did it. Not all people have the patience and effort that requires them to be able to produce a wonderful hand made product. We could see the patience of a person who really pay attention to every detail of the product to give us the best result. It is right that it should be more expensive than machine made products because the quality was surely checked by the person who made it.

I do appreciate hand made crafts too. Before i used to visit all the time to an ethnic store in Makati just to see if they have new designs that I can checked on. There is no chance that I never checked on stores with hand made crafts. They are like magnet to me. Today one of the store I go called "Kultura".These kind of products are way more expensive than to crafts made by machines but the price are worth it. Now whenever my husband need to go of of town for business trip to meet their clients, I always request to buy me something just one as a souvenir and he knows my taste. He always buy me ethnic scarf or ethnic wallet like from Davao and I loved it.

I appreciate the effort that goes into each handmade product but as a minimalist, I don't really go out of my way (and over my budget) with decors or handicraft. I buy things that are useful and worth their price regardless if they're handmade or machine-made. I have nothing against craftsmen but they are not just producing their crafts for art's sake. It's a business like any other business. Hence, they must produce high quality items that can compete with their machine-made counterpart. Being handmade is not enough and many people will not pay more just because it is handmade. It also has to be of high quality and reasonably-priced. I'm aware that some of the so-called handmade products are actually mass-produced items that are made to look like they are unique and naturally imperfect.

Everything is good in hand-made, because you know that the quality is the number one priority. Mass production can't distinguish if the product has a good quality, because its just a machine, and it doesn't know if the product is in good quality or not, as long as its doing its job.

There's a reason why they are pricey. They are authentic, artistic and unique. You can tell that they are done delicately and exquisitely by how they appear. There's a lot that we have from our region and they represent their ethnic groups and communities. These are the reasons that I find them more valuable.

One thing I admired about handmade products is when artistry is put on it. Many handmade products are meticulously crafted which adds up value to the product. Most consumers wont gives that character much thought as they see hand crafted products as indigenous. However, most indigenous products are well made and have the best quality. Another thing I choose to buy handmade products is to support locals selling these things so that they can enter larger market in the future.

I much prefer handmade products as they have an air of individuality about them. Who wants mass produced tat when you can have something unique and beautiful, made carefully and hopefully, with love. A family member of mine seems to be knitting an entire stall of stuffed animals and they are beautifully made and cute. No two are the same. You cannot say that, even of a Steiff bear.

The disadvantage for the craftsman is that it is often impossible to charge a price that reflects the number of hours involved in making the object and the slow production rate. This does not always work out in the craftperson's favour even if the price for the object is fairly high.

I've seen some poorly designed hand-made items. The shoes and handbags I saw were quite ugly. They were somewhat cheaper though. That would explain why whoever made them didn't bother to put too much of their time into it. And judging by appearances only, they wouldn't last that long either.

I suppose the reason many people opt not to buy hand-made items is because they believe that mass-produced items will be of a higher quality.

Hand made crafts that are past along the generations of indigenous people are very artistic. They give attention to details, carefully weaving the way their ancestors did before them. I agree that they do have soul in them. The time spent to perfect such crafts surpasses the years. It is just sad to think that there are people who abuses these such beautiful crafts and their beautiful creators. They charge high for such wonderful crafts, and yet they do not give the indigenous people their fare share. That kind business is really inhumane.

Handmade products are very unique and the factory made mass products cannot take their place ever. The amount of hard work and detailing that is put in the handmade product cannot be copied or cloned by a factory made product. The only problem with the handmade products is that sometimes they are very costly as compared to the products that are created in bulk in the factories. However, when it comes to the look, artistry, quality and durability handmade products are much more superior.

I agree with you. It is so hard to change people's perspective towards handmade products. I actually love handmade products as they are very much product of the talent of a person. There are many things to love about handmade crafts, but it would really be hard to let other people see the beauty of it, especially if they are close-minded and woul prefer the other products.
