Are Online games robbing you of your time?

Once I start playing, I find it hard to stop. I keep telling myself, 'just one more match!' Before I know it, it was already past midnight.

But one day I realized something, these games are like time vacuums. You sit there for hours and then feel as if you accomplished something because you achieved the max level or won five games, but in reality you haven't accomplished anything at all.

If you lose money, you may be able to get it back. But it's the opposite when you lose time. You can never get it back. So we can say that time is more valuable than money. So don't let yourself be robbed! Spend your time wisely.

Yes, they are designed like that, tasks that are challenging yet fun. It wouldn't be addictive if it isn't time-consuming. Perhaps it is their goal so that they can get more advertisements to pay, the more we play the more their income is.

Yea it's true, it won't be time consuming if it's addictive because something that is not addictive is not worth spending so much time on. Since Online games are addictive we should let it be our second priority after our work or other important things.

Well, I guess if that's what you do for a living, then it's okay to be addicted to it, like for example the streamers online, they used to play while they are earning enough money to support them so I guess it's fine for them.

That's also true with me. It must be second priority only. Our work must be our first priority.

Exactly. Games are made to be entertaining that's why a lot of teenagers nowadays spend more time playing online games than to study (although I don't see it as a bad thing actually). However, just like what you stated, only the advertisers can monetize from the online games we play and that is very sad considering that we are the ones who spend a lot of time on playing it.

Online games are time grabbers. It is best done during free time. I always see to it that I don't waste time on unnecessary things.

I guess you are true. Even though we percieve them solely as games, producers and game companies will always consider it as business. Nothing is more important to them than a player sending his time playing the games they created. Business is business.

While I think that it is true that companies that sell games are obviously thinking of selling their games, I do not like to think that game developers are only thinking about the money. A lot of game developers like myself, think more of how would people would react to our games. Ultimately, our main goal is for people to have fun and awesome experience in playing our games.

Definitely. It was their purpose to hook the players to play more as they are challenged. They really design these games to be addictive.

I think when you're working online you need to be really strict especially with your time. it's very easy to do other things and assume have all the time in the world. Its easy for your attention to get diverted with things like playing games. Personally I don't play games online but my attention can be diverted by things like watching Youtube videos so I tend to be strict about what I can do when I'm working. Thank God I don't play online games.

Same. I don't play online games as well but i get easily tempted with YouTube and other social media apps. Online freelancing is definitely a challenging job because you are always connected to the internet and if you can't control yourself (which I am almost all the time XD ) you will definitely find yourself lying on sofa watching YouTube videos or maybe opening a new tab to catch up on your favorite TV Show from Netflix.

This is the way that I am living my life as well. You can't just expect me to start playing games when there are things that I really need to do. There is need to find a balance between pleasure and working since both can't take the time of the other.

True, you can only play online game to relax after a successful and effortful work but just for the sake of pleasure is not fine by me because it will surely disturb your work and your mind will not be concentrated until you accomplish the level in the game.

Playing games is all about getting to understand that there is time for everything. You can't really have it all as you will always have that need to create time to do some other things that you wish to do other than playing games. The best way to handle this is getting to feel the good side of ensuring we do everything that will make things work better for us aside from playing games.

Online games have been a great way for me to stay connected with my good friends and unwind at the end of a full day of working. I typically don't regret the time I spend playing games like League of Legends with my friends, but sometimes I can see why it might get in the way of my priorities.

I'm typically pretty good about prioritizing my time, so games don't get in the way of my social life, work life, or my freelance work.

I think you are saving a lot of time and money in your life by not spending the time in the online games. You can see that there are lot of people spending a wrong amount of time into the games. And that is affecting their life, job, school etc. And that needs to be changed in near time. I have learned from my mistakes with that.

I definitely think that playing a lot of games hurt you mentally and physically. And also takes away your time. Because in game playing state we are often vulnerable. And it's not a good thing about games that they are affecting the mental state of the person. That's what I think most of the time.

That is very true. Luckily I am not very good at playing these online games and therefore I am never tempted to play them for a long time. There are people who can spend days and weeks playing the same again and again. it's like an addiction and may be very harmful if you are spending a lot of your money on this modern form of gambling. besides updating and buying these games can also be a very costly affair.

Maybe before but now I manage not to play anymore games as there are still certain things to focus that are more important than games. Before, I spent half a day in playing Sims 4 as I got very addicted at that time. games like all sweet things can turn out to be addictive and this is why it is always important to exercise control. You should always be the human being and create breaks where you can relax and play a game as not doing so can cause you undue stress and make you be fatigued having reduced productivity.

For me, playing games is never a bad thing, but spending your whole time just to click your mouse, lend your fingers on certain keya on the keyboard, looking at your game character the whole day or holding your phone just for game purposes are clearly ways of wasting your time. You can play games, yes, but always make sure that you have already done your work for the day and have properly prepared for tomorrow. Also, I may sound cheesy, but always lsmake sure that you spend time with your family as how long you spend your time with your favorite games, or make sure that it is more. There's nothing wrong with "working hard and playing hard", just make sure that you observe moderation for the latter one

I don't play online games but I play offline games. Yes, they are both time consuming. I enjoy playing games but later I regret for the time I spent instead of learning valuable skills that could give me additional income. These days, my top priority is to improve my skills that will help me earn more money. I'm not saying that I will not play games again because it somehow help me relieve from stress. I'm so eager to have income stream that will give me plenty free time so I can do the things that I love and one of these is playing games.

Time is indeed money, and you can never get it back. But if you had fun playing the game, and you feel it was worthwhile, why not? Games are designed to entertain you, but if it somehow takes a considerable chunk of your life and is losing the grip on reality, it's time for a raincheck.

I think it all comes down to balance. Everyone needs a way to relax and let off some steam - if we all worked all the time we’d probably go crazy.

If it really began to interfere with everyday life it might be time to reassess the time spent on gaming for sure.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I concur. However, there are times when we get completely hooked to a game without even realizing it ourselves. I think it's best always to have a support group when this time comes or someone to put us in check.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Yes, I think as long as your family and friends are aware of your usual habits and the other demands on your time, then someone is bound to question your time spent on games if it starts becoming excessive! Some games really are designed to suck you in and see you spending hours on it - and it's like you completely lose track of time.

I agree with you it is all about perspective of a person. A few people assume it is, and a few people think its not. It relies upon on who you're and your desires. For instance someone who thinks playing video games are a waste of time would possibly have a purpose like it doesn’t make me accomplish something, so it’s a waste of time. But the individual that doesn’t see it as a waste of time would possibly say something like it’s amusing, I am enjoying myself, how is that a waste of time. Isn’t that what lifestyles is all about, enjoying ourselves? It’s all about angle.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I completely agree. Calling one's hobby (like playing games) a waste of time might appear offensive to some. Life is all about being happy, and what matters is you're satisfied with what you do whatever it is.

I couldn't agree more to this. Online games may definitely steal your time intended for doing more important tasks. I've experienced online game addiction, I spent too much time playing. It became worse to the point where I would wake up 6am in the morning to play until 2am in the next morning, I even eat my meals in front of my computer. The only two other things I do aside from playing online games are to eat and take a bath. Then I realized I was trying to create a life in a virtual world while slowly messing up my life in this real world.

I'm glad that you had the foresight to realize it was becoming an addiction and managed to get away from it. I think games are just fine if there's balance in other areas of life, but when it becomes all consuming then it can be as dangerous as a drug, really.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, it does. I used to be very addicted to playing online games and even though my addiction is down a bit at the moment, it still consumes ample of my time whenever I get to play.

My favorite online games are soccer and football related games. Once I get into it, it would take hours before I stop.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There is nothing wrong for seeking entertainment as long as they give you fun experiences. Games are worth your time because you deserve to relax sometimes, to do shallower things sometimes because taking life too seriously is missing the real point of living. But you would know that it is time to stop when, instead of being happy after playing you are just frustrated. If after playing the game you are more stressed then the game is not for you. As I always say about these things, these are merely tools, so treat them as tools: use them. If you would know how to use them properly, then there isn't anything that you are losing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Exactly. That's why I don't engage myself with online games or anything like it because number one, I don't want my time to be wasted, and two, because I don't want to waste electricity by playing while losing because I'm not a good gamer. However, I've heard about gamers who are actually earning some good cash by selling their accounts to other people, specially those who already passed the highest levels. Just like for example, a friend of mine has a friend who is a DOTA player. That friend plays very well and every time he reaches the highest level, he sells his account online and a buyer from either the US or Europe buys it and sends him the payment via Paypal or thru the remittance center.

There is a simple way anyone can avoid wasting time - plan your day.

Planning your day will take less than 15 minutes but you'll be more productive if you know exactly what you intend to do. You'll not only be able to complete what is important but you might even have some free time to do anything else that may not have been on your "to do list."

That said, I don't play games when I should be working but I always spend a few hours playing online checkers at night.

I agree with you, but sometimes if you play games you don't notice the time because you are to focus in your game.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Exactly. You would be so engrossed in the game that you forget the time. When you keep losing in the game you want to play more to win. But when you keep winning, you want to go on and reach the next level.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
Agreed. It easy to lose track of time when you are really engrossed in a game.

That is why if it is possible one should play online games only after they've done everything that had to be done that day. This way it wouldn't matter how much time you spend online playing games. At the end of it all you won't feel like you wasted any time even if you spend hours online playing that game.

Before, yes. I became once an addicted gamer when I was a teenager. But it also have taught me to manage my time and be responsible as an adult now. Disciplining and time management are the key even you play video games today. I still play games now but just during my free time. You shouldn't let gaming consume you and your time completely. Unless you wanted to become a professional athlete for eSports then that is another story.

Yes, there are a lot people who got addicted in gaming but it eventually became their career which let them earn by just playing, streaming, competing in national tournament, merchandising, etc. But I think those people who are being called now professional gamers came from wealthy family who let them do whatever they want. It also reminds me of one person who unexpectedly became a professional gamer after becoming one of the popular and in demand game streamer nowadays - in one certain mobile game. I once became his fan because he always gives entertainment whenever he plays a game and he's very talented and skillful.

I also play online games occasionally to relax but I always know when to stop. There are a lot more interesting things to do than play games and if you're not focused on your work, you may find yourself watching funny dogs/cats videos or browsing through entertainment or gossip pages. I’ve actually ran into this problem recently. I love to play video games, but over the last few years I’ve been playing them less and less. I used to play for eight hours a day sometimes, but as I got older, I’d go weeks at a time without playing at all.

However, recently a friend of mine gave me Overwatch because he got an extra copy of it from a sale. I wasn’t expecting much out of it, but I figured I’d give him the courtesy of trying it out considering he was generous enough to gift me it. I kind of feel like I never should have even tried it because I find the game incredibly addicting.

Combining online shooter elements with an RPG-like leveling/reward system makes the game incredibly hard to resist. I actually uninstalled it the other day because it started to get in the way of my work.

Online gaming is addictive and when one is hooked to it, one has to take tremendous effort to pool one self from it. The gaming is so engaging that one may lose count of number of hours spent in front of pc. Not to mention the loss of one's money and time, too much gaming causes many health problems. Those will need much more times to recover.

Hi there!
I used to have a massive addiction for videogames, mostly online games. Now I can spare only 1-2 hours a day, so I'd say not, they're not. Back when I was in school I used to skip months of school days because I just couldn't log off. But hey, there's a reason for it. First of all, they were fun, and my friends in school were not. Secondly, I improved my English. And third, I saw no perspective in school for my future (and I was right), and I didn't see it as an important thing in my life. I don't regret a thing hehe.

I truly agree on what you said that losing time makes you lose more than losing in the game. I also got hooked up with a game that made me so occupied even though there are tasks and works that I should be doing first. Me and my boyfriend also argued about this as he always play games than talking to me and felt jealous of it. Truly time is something that you can never get back and everyone should learn to make good use of it.

I think that online games in general do fall under the category of wasted time. You're progressing and leveling up in the game but not in real life. It will become apparent when the game developers finally decide to shut down and all your time and progress is erased from existence. This was my wake up call back when I was a kid. I've dedicated like half a decade to a game when I should have been developing skills needed in the real world. Sad to say, I never got to do those things until now.

The answer is definitely "YES"
Especially MMORPGs! Playing online games is the best form of time killer, it's also a good time waster. Sometimes you'll be so engrossed in what you're playing (quests, farming, or grinding) that you forget about what's going on in the real world and when your phone needs a charge that's when you snap back to reality and realize you've just wasted hours on playing. It's one of the reasons why I stopped playing online games.

If you are a gamer you wouldn't think about that at all specially when you have nothing to do. It is a matter of choice if you would play a game for your free time or you must do something else that is important. It is your choice if you waste your time for a game or just do what you think you must do. When you think it would waste your time well don't do so. But playing game helps you to release your stress and just relax.

Definitely Yes! all those people who created this games are experts they make this games addictive by giving you rewards and or giving ranks in order to play more, because by that players will play more to earn those rewards and or ranks which make players feel good. So yes I've been a victim but now I'm good at balancing my time and that's a good thing.

I am guilty of this. Before I even play ten to twelve hours just to finish some quests or tasks because every task will reset everyday. Luckily I was able to manage my time as I grew older. As a child you won't notice this much since you are enjoying and doesn't care about the future and life but once you get older, you tend to treasure every bit of your time.

Heck yes they are and they are getting worse i feel by the minute! Like how are you ever supposed to even make anything when you have to jump thru fiery hoops that are super tiny and hard to fit thru on top of it. Everyone is all about the quick buck, how can i make more money instead of vesting in their consumers. A very dumb strategy to success i feel.

It may rob my time but it's definitely worth it. as what the quote says, "The time you enjoy wasting is not a wasted time." So for me personally I love playing games and I only play too when I have nothing else to do so it's not really robbing my time because I enjoy doing it.

It takes discipline. You have to know how to discipline yourself because if not, yes it can rob your time. It can waste your time. But there are games that you can play and earn at the same time. I think these are the type of games that are worth to play because you can get something from it rather than just play and stay in their websites or apps and just waste your precious time. You could have spent your time on other things that are more worthwhile and productive.

Are online games robbing of your time: Sometimes if I started to play, it was hard for me stop me even my mund keep on telling that this is the last and sleep afted but then it will never be unless if my battery got low, i have no choice but to stop it already after that game because if I continue it I may not finished another game and my battery got drain.

Yes I strongly agree with this, a game can really rob you of your time I was once addicted to video games when I was younger I usually skip school just to finish a game and in college, I would purposely miss class just to play an online game I also experienced not sleeping for 2 days because I was leveling up my character in an online game and I could say I regret all of that nothing good came out in being to absorbed in video games. Nowadays I still play a video game but I do it in moderation, I usually spend my time now in learning a new skill that can be used in real life. Life is the real online game and you are the only character you need to level up.

Yes, they are. They were created with this purpose. I am now playing mu online, and It takes a lot of my time. I am playing like 5-6 hours per day, and it's still not enough. This is it, gaming takes a lot of time. I really like to play different video games, but I actually think that I am wasting too much time on it.

Come on, don't think so categorically , friends
Games are designed not only to shake off money from you or to put more advertising in the game, some people really relax like this, playing different games, relax and have fun with friends or family. The main thing is to know the measure of dudes, I can say from my own experience , I did not know the measure and spent too much time on games, but fortunately my cousin helped me with this and started playing with me less and less often , and then recommended me https://tips.gg/ where we started betting on dota 2 and csgo , and so instead of playing, we started slowly earning money and watching professional games , which is pretty cool, since you realize that you benefit from games

Why did you buy them? There are a lot of ways how to obtain them without buying. I used to buy them when I was little, and I didn't understand that I could find them differently. On the internet, there are a lot of sites that offer different promo codes to get additional bonuses, including skins. Now they play Rust in an online casino, and they also provide banditcamp referral codes that they use in the same way to win different skins or other prizes. I've come across quite a few coats, so now I use these codes more to get money. It's super cool! Try it.
