Manufacturing and selling Halloween costumes

Giving the fact that Halloween is just around the corner, I was thinking on the idea of manufacturing Halloween costumes 12 months in advance, preparing for next year's Halloween shopping season.
People create their own costumes all the time, just look at the people manufacturing their cosplay stuff for cosplay conventions, you can do the same for Halloween, the ones made for kids are much easier to design and create so that would be an even better niche.

I was thinking on starting a small business on this, start manufacturing handmade Halloween costumes for children this winter with my family creating something like 200 pieces while simultaneously creating a website targeting SEO based keywords that are only trending on Halloween season so when the shopping madness starts next year I would be in top positions with my website, ready to sell the hell out of my creations.
Of course, LidingDocks will play a big role in all of this and I will also publish my products here, but having a website already ready in top SERPs positions can be hugely productive.

If everything turns out good next year and I end up gaining a profit from this, maybe I can outsource the handmade part to manufacturers in China, buying everything at a much better price.

This is funny that you bring this up i was just talking about this last night. Some lady was selling costumes on Facebook and i was thinking about doing the same thing next year. The problem i run into is that participating in any Halloween activities is against my religion. I think that this would be a good business to start especially if you have the time to put the work and detail into it. Try and keep your cost down buy making a few of each product. You don't want to make to many and be stuck a whole year with the left overs. Things change and things become more popular or unpopular. This can make or break your business especially if you have old stuff left over. China makes everything cheap if you could get a connection their then you may not need to make anything yourself. Less work you have to do to turn a profit the better the business is. Thanks for sharing!

My wife and mother and really good at crafting things and making artistic stuff, so I think we have a pretty good chance if we work together, I can handle the logistic part of the actual selling online as well as creating the website we need.

Cristian I think that is an awesome idea, manufacture throughout the year and prepare for the massive Halloween sales. It sounds like great fun and Halloween is really popular. Why not create family based costumes, so like sets...

I don't know why but when I saw a pair of matching mommy and daughter boots I just couldn't help getting for me and my daughter even though they were really overpriced. I have also bought my hubby and son matching clothing before, it was just way too cute.

Witches costumes would work nicely for mom and daughter sets? I was actually thinking of getting matching witches costumes for me and my daughter this year. Halloween is not really big in South Africa, but my daughter's birthday was yesterday (29th) and I was considering throwing a Halloween dress up party for her 5th birthday. Maybe next year?

Halloween is a foreign culture and practice of the Western world, it's not something that is being celebrated over here in developing countries like mine Nigeria, we don't know what Halloween is all about.

Although I am well aware about Halloween and how it's been celebrated, and as much as would love to participate in it being someone or something or anything you desire to be, it's not going to be possible because should I dress in one crazy outfit in the name of Halloween here, if I just get beaten by the mob it's a fair treatment or worst I would be captured and forcefully sent to the mental institutions.

Maybe I should keep my love and desire for a Halloween celebration in check until I am able to visit the Western world and experience their own custom and tradition together with their culture.

manufacturing products for your niche business is a good idea. However, you will have to calculate manufacturing cost in advance. If your cost price is very high, it will be difficult to sell. Before you start manufacturing, you will have to do a market study, how much money people are paying for this product. If you can manufacture the product and sell on the average price on the market, you may be able to drive sales.
I think procurement is better than manufacturing. China is a good market for outsourcing. Since the labor cost is very low, product in China cost very cheap.

A seasonal business is hard because you can only earn during halloween's. You are not also sure if they are someone who will buy it. But if a well-known business is going to do it, it is an easy money. So first make your business famous.

Gotta be careful with this sort of endeavor. The costumes have to be made from good material so they don't fade, peel or make someone sick. Also there can't be any parts that come off easily that kids can choke on. Of course when one goes into this line of work they aren't purposefully or intentionally trying to hurt anyone. But companies (small or large) who make costuming face all kinds of issues... legal and otherwise when a child is sickened by one of their costumes. Or chokes on an accessory. The products are recalled, the company loses money and lawsuits can result as well. Really gotta be careful when you go into the apparel business. Especially when you're making clothing for youngsters.

I've seen a lot of people make their own cosplay costumes but doesn't show how they do it. That's a good thing to manufacture your own Halloween costumes and sell it to people to earn some extra bucks, but the question is how? Can someone shows us what to do or how to do it? Nice post, by the way.

I will be making my own costume for Halloween this year. I wanted something unique. I think that it is a very good idea to start this business. Many people will for sure buy those costumes. However this can be a bit consuming and you will have to hire people to work with you. I hope that you are successful. Good luck.

Good job. I think you should open an instagram page in order to promote your works, so that many others will find out about you. The costumes look so original and very well made. I was looking for costumes for my twins for their Christmas fest. Since I returned to work, I don't have so much time to make them by myself, and it's more convenient for me tu buy. Still, I want something special and unique for them. I was thinking about a long fashionable dress with cristal wings for the girl and a blue penguin tuxedo for the boy. What do you think about it?
