Is Global Warming a Factor in Business?

As Al Gore described, people and economies would start to feel the effects of global warming, and people and businesses needs to adapt to this situation.  What is your take on this?

I think to be feeling an impact from it, it would really depend on the type of industry that you're in. For me personally as a freelance writer, I haven't noticed an impact as a result of global warming. However, I have friends who are in agricultural businesses and they definitely notice it - everything from weather conditions to having to plant crops at later times of the year to do well...so I think it all depends what kind of work you do.

I think it depends on what your business is. I mean if you are dealing in something that is directly impacted by the weather maybe it does. If it is something that is independent of weather functions than it probably does not.

I agree with you. Some industries won’t really feel the global warming and their profits won’t be affected by it. However if the nature of the business is heavily affected by changes in the weather or temperature, there should be an adjustment on how the business operates.

It depends on the business you have. It can increase your sales or decrease it. The question is very general. There are a lot of businesses that can benefit in Global Warming.

I think it's a domino effect, although some industries or businesses are not affected directly it may be just because of indirect links that slows down the effect. A simple example is a musician, they have no direct connection to global warming but industries like farming and livestock's do. If these industries increase their selling price due to global warming the effects will definitely goes down to the musician because this products are essential to him. In this way the income of the musician will be affected because of the price.

I do think eventually global warming would be a major factor to affect businesses, specially the farming sector. When farmlands become heavily affected with either drought or floods due to extreme weather patterns, then crop producers would have no recourse but to grow crops using other methods and that would bring a lot of businesses to adapt to this and a whole new industry will emerge.

Yes of course. Global warming is a great factor in business. Especially with agribusiness, the weather condition must be considered.

Global warming is a factor in some business. I have a dairy business. I raise cattle for my dairy industry. cattle needs grass and in order to grow grass, you need rain. You can water through an irrigation system, however, when the temperature is really hot, irrigation does not work, you need rain. However, rain is scarce here because of global warming.
Global warming has taken a toll in my business.

Yes it seems like global warming is now affecting more people. And also animals and the grass is also affected. In future more damage is likely to happen to many things like fruits. And also the vegetables too. So things are gong to have that effect.
    June 13, 2018, 6:27 am
  • kgord 0
Yes, I think that it has a direct effect on animals, and also perhaps businesses along the shore which might be more suspectible to flooding. They might have to take out more flood insurance, and make things more expensive. It is just one of the issues with global warming. I think it also has hidden effects.

It's such a shame that some good businesses are adversely affected by Global warming and there is nothing the business owner can do about it except try to manage it the best way he or she could with irrigation system based on your dairy business. With the kind of adverse effects we have with weather at this very moment, I have taken up few business in water distribution because lots of people are lacking it over here and the business is doing just fine.

Global warming has dried river basins, which has also affected the irrigation system. Groundwater is an alternative irrigation system, however, water source inside the earth is also drying. The only way to save the environment and lessen the consequences of global warming is by planting trees. Greenhouse gases is one of the reasons of global warming and by planting trees we will be able to clean carbon dioxide gas from the environment.

I think freezing industry is affecting with the global warming. As they tend to have more issues with lack of water. And also the water they get needs to be treated properly. So the global warming is real. And people need to understand they are causing it by cutting the trees. You can see that global warming is not going to affecting some business but a lot of different business may surely get affected.

I strongly believe that global warming is already affecting businesses and the economy of most of the countries. In my country, for example, the agriculture businesses are affected and I am sure this happens all over the world because climate changed and seasons was modified in small quantity.
    June 12, 2018, 5:31 am
  • overcast 0
I think AC industry too have affected. They are doing good business but supply vs demand is not going good. I think lot of industries are being affected. And it seems like that is not so easy on that count. It may take time for all of us to learn about it though.
    June 16, 2018, 7:32 am
  • aeon 0
Yeah, that's right, it's already happening in our country. We always have rice shortages, because of floods during the heavy rain, and dry soil during summer, fish kills also happening in some area because of the weather condition.
    June 22, 2018, 7:42 am
  • ballyhara 0
Eventually, we all will be feeling the global warming effect, or we are experiencing it in a very small way. Lack of water leads to diminish energy, and without electricity there's no way we'll have communications, or at least not the technology we're used to right now. There are places worldwide right now, that are suffering electrical shot downs, and they can spend hours without any kind of power. So, global warming is already taking its toll on us, we just don't take proper attention.
    June 12, 2018, 7:29 am
  • Barida 0
You are correct on this in the sense that we really need to do everything within our powers to ensure that we survive the situation at the end. Global warming is a situation that we should look to take good care of as that is the only way that we can have a better world at the end.
    June 20, 2018, 9:38 am
  • ballyhara 0
As long as it doesn't affect the people, they don't get any conscious about it. Right now where I live, we have cities that can stay even 12 hours without energy, water level on the dams is getting lower and lower, and obviously we can't produce enough energy for all. Unfortunately, when these kind of issues happen worldwide, it would be too late.
    June 21, 2018, 8:30 am
  • Kakashi2020 0
I think global warming would soon affect almost all industries specially the food industry because eventually due to erratic weather patterns it would have a toll in food production like in farming grains, vegetables and fruits. When that happens it would affect the supply of animal feeds which would then affect the volume of poultry, and other livestock animals leading to a shortage of meat. These would in turn lead to low supply and eventually starvation.

I was just thinking does anyone know or has an idea what kind of business would be ideal to this kind of situation?
    June 12, 2018, 7:37 am
  • treecko142 0
Definitely, people are being more responsible for the environment and the effects our actions do with the environment, and it's a common practice for some of the more vocal people to boycott companies whose actions are known to have a negative impact on the environment. In addition, it's been part of the corporate social responsibility to do something for the environment and the society as a whole to help promote a positive image for the company.
    June 12, 2018, 7:48 am
  • amelia88 0
I'm thankful that awareness and responsibility when it comes to the environment is growing. I do hope that it's not a case of too little too late though. I do think that we all have a responsibility to try and do better when it comes to helping the environment - even if we think our actions are small, they all add up.
    June 15, 2018, 8:00 pm
  • treecko142 0
Yeah, I think with all of the efforts that various governments and companies have done during the turn of the century, the environment has been in a much better state and is slowly recovering from all the initial damage that has been done to it during the period of industrial revolution when people were just discovering more technology before thinking of environmental consequences.

Global warming is actually affecting us in many ways at this very moment. This affects our businesses specially in the agricultural sector. The erratic weather nowadays is just a simple problem global warming gives that greatly affects industries in terms of communication, logistics and even production.
    June 12, 2018, 11:39 am
  • aeon 0
In some business I think, specially the agriculture and food business. Our country already affected by this global warming, I don't know how the agriculture business can manage the weather condition in our country, if it's summer, the land or soil is really dry, and during the rainy season, the flood is all over the their land.

I guess some creative companies can utilize global warming to offer products and services that focus on global warming. They may make something that helps prevent global warming or something that people can use if ever global warming worsens and change our climate permanently.
    June 15, 2018, 1:09 pm
  • Kakashi2020 0
Your quite right in that companies and businesses would eventually concentrate on global warming related products and services. In the advent of global warming we should prepare ourselves, well they say that weather would really turn nasty in 2050 and there would be floods, human migration and food shortages and that's around 30 years from now.
    June 15, 2018, 3:36 pm

Global warming is a very serious effect in all we do today, both business and private life otherwise. It's something that have come to stay and there is no way to changing it but finding a way to adapt to global warming and make good use of what it comes with will definitely favor one's business.
    June 15, 2018, 2:06 pm
  • Kakashi2020 0
Precisely, adaptation is the correct word for it, for people to survive we must adapt to nature. And I think starting up a business now related to global warming would be a profitable business.
    June 15, 2018, 3:39 pm
  • Martinsx1 0
Exactly, when you fail to adapt with what and how events are going on in your environment, there is every possibility of going into extinction because the overwhelming force of nature is dominant in the face of every other thing. So, in business with how global warming is positioned now, such business will need to reshape its mode of operation in order to survive.

I think we have to think a lot about things around. And that's what we are going to face. Because with global warming we are going to have health and other causalities issues. I think business are the first to suffer in this sort of the things.
    June 17, 2018, 10:42 am
  • Martinsx1 0
You are very correct my friend with that assertion on business being the first to suffer as a result of Global warming, it's important to point that the environmental situation changes as well because it affects agriculture, which in turn affects food production etc.

Global warming is real. I live in a country where the weather has been very unpredictable for the last couple of years. We have had years of drought and years of floods. Both killing people. It rains when it is not supposed to rain and is sunny and dry when it is supposed to be raining. Businesses should absolutely take this into consideration when planning especially agriculture businesses.
    June 16, 2018, 7:22 am
  • fishbate 0
I agree, businesses nowadays need to have a contingency plan on how to deal with the effect of global warming. Also i really think that most business had to have programs on how to improve our climate by promoting activities that help reduce global warming.
    June 19, 2018, 7:21 pm
  • overcast 0
I agree. Both flood and drought kills people. And it's not easy to live in the places. So on that basis, I can tell you that it's always better to work around the business. I guess we learn from the experience. And things just settle over a period of time.

The government needs to support the agriculture, and should create the solution to this global warming. The farmers and fisherman are the most affected of this weather condition. They are the most affected compare to other businessman.

  • Kakashi2020 0
I think global warming is a big factor in the food industry because it affects the production, supply and prices of food commodities. I really think this sector should prepare a lot of contingencies to ensure the production of different crops and meats in any condition.

Clean energy in my opinion is the best way to counter the effects of global warming. Also diverting to a more cleaner sources of energy minimizes the carbon footprint from industries and cars. It may not be a long term action but it will definitely help us prepare for the future.
    June 20, 2018, 1:20 pm
  • DenisP 0
"Clean energy in my opinion is the best way to counter the effects of global warming."

It's not just your opinion, either, but the opinion of just about every environmental scientist out there. The fact is that we need to reduce our carbon emissions by 60% within the next ten years if we want to curb the effects of global warming. If we don't hit that key reduction rate, we're going to see disastrous consequences in the coming years.

The problem is that at this point if carbon emissions aren't reduced, it'll trigger a feedback loop that will make the effects of global warming exponentially worse over the next century.
    June 30, 2018, 5:36 am
  • DenisP 0
I think that global warming will both positively and negatively affect different business sectors. For example, the agricultural industry is bound to take a huge hit at the current rate. In my country, the weather has been growing increasingly extreme over the past few years, and there has been a huge spike in hail storms the past year. People who own orchards and vineyards have seen up to 90% of their harvest decimated by hail the previous year, and there have been severe losses this year already as well. The same is true for neighboring countries as well. Agriculture is bound to take the biggest hit.

On a positive note, the need to reduce carbon emissions will most likely result in a financial boom within the clean energy industry.

  • jaybee19 0
I'm not an expert about this but what I know is that there will be both negative and positive effects that businesses might and will gain from global warming. Say for example, restaurants who offer cold beverages will get more customers while coffee shops may need to adjust i.e. iced coffee to embrace the needs of customers due to the warm weathers that is causing our body to feel warm making us decline hot beverages. Also businesses like farming will be really affected, and so I guess more and more farmers will plant and invest on plants that doesn't die due to the hot weather, but instead can easily adapt to it.

We have a saying in my native language that literally translates to: '' Only those that have been burnet by ember would understand ''. Meaning you would only understand or care about something if it affects you. That's what I think when it comes to this question. I think only businesses that could be affected by global warming would care, and for their own profit.

The only constant thing in the world is the word "change". Everything changes, and the only thing you can do about it is to adopt. Same thing in the business. Entrepreneurs must know how to adopt to the changes whether it is about Global Warming or the changes of the needs of the people. I didn't take any courses about Economy but I guess in my own perception, a successful businessman must know what do about the changing needs of a fast growing modern society he is in.

I agree, adapting on the environment you live in is basically included on making your business sustainable. Constant innovation and improvements should also be considered. The most important thing is keeping your methods and processes environment friendly.
    July 1, 2018, 8:08 pm
  • jennyfermanuel 0
Yes. I agree with keeping your process environment friendly. There are those businessmen who finds success because they know how to adapt to the needs and changes of the people, the saddening part is that yes they are aware of the risks their business will give to the environment but not minding them at all.

It really differs on the law of the land, there are laws in other countries with strict regulations and high suctions if a business didn't comply on environmental laws. It's the same reason why business go for countries that have very weak environmental laws.
    July 11, 2018, 10:20 am
  • jennyfermanuel 0
I never thought about it. Like I am not aware why people start their businesses on other countries. I mean, I know there are some reasons, but I never thought some of them are starting their business to other country which has a very weak environmental laws.
    July 11, 2018, 1:18 pm
  • fishbate 0
Most businesses like mining and rigging do this, business wise it's beneficial for them. Weak law means less regulations, with that the profit is much more higher because of less spending for complying regulations.

I think that global warming has an adverse effects not just in business sector but as well as the whole world. We all know that global warming is a serious case and a big threat to humanity, a certain business cannot prosper because they will be limited in terms of using their machineries because most of the businesses in the world emits harmful chemicals that trigger the world to have a climate change. Businesses should be mindful as much as possible to minimize the great effects of global warming to us.
    July 2, 2018, 1:25 am
  • fishbate 0
I just hope that there is a international law that supports high sanctions for none compliant countries. This is the only way to efficiently reduce factors of global warming coming from industries. Also scientist should find a way to exactly pinpoint the cause and effect of global warming. Theories will not help, in the world we live in proof and evidence is the only way that make people agree.

A person in business and government who ignores the impact of global warming is like a military general who ignores weather reports and forecasts. A smart general knows how to use the weather to help him fight the enemy. Napoleon lost his men because his enemy knew the snow and bitter cold would kill them. Ignore global warming at your peril.

Global warming definitely has an effect in business most especially when you lived in tropical country. You need to adapt to change of the environment. The typhoons become stronger compare to the past years and I believed it is because of Global Warming.

In my view, global warming is a very important factor in whatever kind of business, starting from Agribusiness to online jobs owing to its diverse effects . For instance, Climatic disruptions caused by sudden shifts of weather patterns leading to heavy downpours which could have an ultimate effect of destroying power sources and lines, roads and network lines, destruction of crops in the fields when it rains snow or simply because of erosion, hailstorms e.t.c. Effects of Global Warming can be either directly or indirectly. When transport networks are destroyed, costs of transporting raw materials and processed goods rise and the same is passed on to the final consumer in terms of high prices for products. When power sources are destroyed due to heavy rains, there mighty be power blackout which makes it hard for guys working online to make a fortune since gadgets used rely on power. Direct effects are the obvious ones; Hampering moment of people and means of transports, deaths, famine, e.t.c. So, in listing factors affecting business performance, it is important to factor in Global Worming since its effects are far-reaching than is popularly known.

Global warming is a very important subject and it should be dealt with on a priority basis by each and every nation of the world. I think that the negative effects of global warming have been felt all over the World in the recent past. Even if it does not have a direct effect on the online business it will surely have an effect indirectly. the unexplained phenomenon of very extreme weather conditions will definitely have an effect on the people who work online. Besides, there are floods, volcanic eruptions, heat waves, tornados, typhoons which will result in a large scale destruction of life and property.

I think that Global warming affects everything. Maybe everyone doesn’t feel it right now. But surely in the furture eveyone will be afffected. We should not take this problem lightly. Everyone should take their part on conserving the earth.

I think as awareness regarding global warming and it's effects is increased, we'll be seeing more people opting to buy products which they believe are "eco-friendly."

At the moment of course it's just a marketing gimmick for many companies but when people actually start asking questions to find out if what they are using is eco-friendly as marketed, only those selling products which are genuinely eco-friendly will get more sales. It might take a little while before this happens though.

It's never too early to start a business which sells such products.

I think that we are already starting to feel the effects of global warming. For example agriculture businesses that are affected by floods that destroy their crops. Anyone who does not see the effects of global warming, needs help. Global warming is responsible for killing so many businesses e.g floods destroying business premises and staff loosing their jobs. This is something to be ignored at your own risk.

It all depends on what business you are doing and where you are located. Choice of the business industry is a key area and if you are choosing an area which is not related to climatic changes, then you are safe. Also, do not stay close to the poles/ice caps as you would be deprived of people in those areas. Choose safer regions where demand for your business would be ever increasing.

Just like most of the comments above said it would depend on the type of business that you have. For products that are related to the weather conditions like electric fan and air conditioning system can have a boom in sales if properly promoted. I had seen a solar powered electric fan that would be a hit in the tropical countries that are so warm during summer. But unfortunately the solar system of getting energy from the sun is not real.
