Well, first thing you need to do, is to study the basics, otherwise you won't have at least the main notions. Go to bookstores, libraries, and get the basics from legit sources. Once you want to put yourself in action, check out some tutorials online, like the ones you can find in YouTube, I mean is not the best option, but it will give you the first step. Another option is to take some lessons online, make contact with a community college or technical school, or maybe a graphic designer that give you some guidance.

All should start from the basic and fundamentals. No one go straight to intermediate level. All should experienced and try the basic ones.

As I mentioned in a comment below, online tutorials are actually how I got my start in graphic design. The way things actually kicked off for me was that, at 15 years old I downloaded a pirated version of Photoshop (don't do illegal things, kids) for the purpose of photo editing. I then started fooling around with the different tools and was curious about its potential.

After I joined some forums, I started noticing people were including these intricate signature banners and designs and I wanted to learn how to do that myself. First I started with one tutorial, then another, and another, until next thing I knew I was sitting in a college classroom majoring in Graphic Design.

If you have no experience beforehand, its best to watch videos of the basics rather than just reading guides because you'll learn better when there is someone to show you step-by-step. Preferably it's better in person, but videos will do and Youtube is a great source, since you can search for anything you need and it's there. You also need to choose which software you want to use, and Photoshop is the best for me but it may be too complex for your purposes, depending on where you'll use it.

I'll definitely make use of videos as that is the way that the way that the things that I have studied will remain glued to my memory. I'm thinking of making use of YouTube videos or do you have a better idea of the site to check out?

This is a discussion that I was actually having with my cousin just yesterday. We both have backgrounds in graphic design, and we were talking about the days of learning to use programs before the advent of YouTube.

YouTube was around when we started learning, but it wasn't as popular at the time. If you wanted online tutorials, they'd always come in the form of written lessons and, if you got lucky, screenshots. It became so much easier to learn once YouTube tutorials started becoming popular, so it's definitely an invaluable resource that everyone should use.

Exactly. Recently technologies, softwares and programs have made graphic designing a lot of better and easier the way it is now.

Before now, graphic design was in its crude format and learning it was very hard but now, it's a lot easier to learn. The presence of YouTube makes it more better as well.

Definitely, and there are a lot of high-quality tutorials out there for whatever field you want to learn from. And the best part is that it's totally free.

Since you're already a writer, that will help you a lot in your graphic designing journey! You can't be a graphic designer without being a good communicator. But since you've got that out of the way, the first thing you have to do is just watch some videos about graphic designing to see what it really is. If you still feel like you want to do that, then start drawing and sketching on paper.
You don't have to be that good, but to just be able to lay out your ideas so that you can, later on, execute them.
After that, learn the very basics of design (line, shape, proximity, proportion...). Once you feel you've got a grip on what's graphic design's all about, start specializing, practice, and seek some feedback from other graphic designers.
As for websites, I think alison.com will help you out.

Honestly, while I was still a kid, I always draw stuffs with a pencil and this is a way to show that I am simply passionate about designing things. I will make use of the tips that you have suggested and see how far that I am going to with them. Thanks for the site suggestion, will try to check it later when I've gotten to a certain level.

The eagerness to learn graphic design is what will make a person quick to learn. All you have to do is to study the basic and from there you can already use your creativity to enhance that skill. You'll be able to do graphic design like a pro if you keep on practicing.

There are a lot of sources where you can get the basic for graphic design. On top of that sources is the Internet. There are a lot of videos you can watch where they teach you step by step on what to do in every design you want to accomplish. They teach you what are the applications, tools and how to use them. Aside from just watching videos, you can also read books to familiarize yourself with terms and tricks you can do with different software available. If both are not enough for the level of learning you want to achieve when it comes to graphic design, then you can enroll yourself in short courses offered. Here you can get tips from professionals in the field.

It is because of how eager that I am made me to start up this discussion so as to read the views of everyone that is on the site. It is a good way that I can get to know the steps that I am going to take when it comes to become better with graphics designing.

There are no easy ways if you want to achieve something. You need to practice and enhance your talents. Not everything can bought by money. We need to work hard in order to achieve what we wanted to be.

I agree, consistency is the key, learning is not a one day thing. Practice is essential and know is experienced thru practice. After you learned the basic's, all you need to do is improve and innovate. Just don't stop until you reached your goal.

Agree. To me, investing time and effort into learning something new, is the better gift you can give yourself. So, if you really want to learn something for good, you have to sweat your butt learning. Nowadays, everybody wants to get everything by doing the least they can do, and we all know that's not going to prepare you well enough. That's why, my suggestion was to go to the basics, and learn them really well, talent will help him out for sure, but practice and study will make him excellent.

Looking at taking the easy way out or having it easy in anything that you are doing, there is no way you are going to be the best at what you do. This is why when you want to be perfect at what you do, you are going to have to invest more time at what you do. Learning takes time and it's not something to be rushed. Take your time and get better.

I think for me YouTube is the best approach. The reason being YouTube has lot of variety. Small tips and tricks are being shared on some of the youtube channels and the forums. So it can be really good to join some of those sites where you can see the videos and the tutorials being shared for the learning experience. Learn Coreldraw video tutorial through YouTube. There seems to be a lot of such options. You can easily start with one course and take things ahead.

I'm grateful for the tips. The issue with is that are living in this part of the world is the cost of data subscription. I believe that once I can be able to get data at a cheaper rate, then going ahead to learn via YouTube is something that is going to be awesome for me. I believe that loads of information are on it.

You can try udemy or Alisson to learn graphic design. Both of these sites have tailor-made courses on graphic design. While you can find courses on udemy for just $10, Alisson is a free program. However, if you want a certificate of completion for the course you studied on Alisson, you will have to pay. You can find a lot of DIY videos on youtube however, learning through youtube will be confusing because it will take a while to find good tutorials.

I have seen allison but it does not seem to have in depth video tutorials. I think youtube and twitch on the other hand are more detailed. And you can learn a lot of small things in there. So on that note I'd be surely making use of the youtube more. Udemy is also good but it is paid.

In my opinion, the easiest way to get started on learning graphic design is through YouTube tutorials. Obviously there are much better ways than this, but this is the best way to do it for free. I actually got my start in graphic design by simply watching tutorials. It's a good way to figure out if graphic design is really something you want to invest your time in. That and if you decide to pursue a higher education and want to major in graphic design, you'll be well prepared. Like I said, I began with YouTube tutorials and then when I moved on to college to major in graphic design, I was way ahead of my peers and the classes were super easy as a result.

I think there is no easy way but it will be more easy if you are interested in that matter. It requires patience because you will need to learn and know the rules and the tools in graphic designing, You may want to look for some of tutorials in youtube. Just practice everyday and don't forget to learn the PENTOOL this is one of the important tool especially if you are using photoshop and illustrator. I don't know but in my case, at first I have difficulty controlling the pentool before but since I practiced it whenever I used photoshop its a lot more of easier for me to navigate it before it was taught in class. My professor just told us that pentool is important especially if you will be working in advertising field as you cannot really rely on quick or marquee tool.

Yup, pentool is hard to use at first but when you learned how to it works it is very helpful in designing and manipulating graphics.

Thanks for the recommendation of pentool as I believe that it is going to go long way in making me a better graphics designer when I am able to learn it better. Also, with the way that things are going, I believe that making use of photoshop is the better option that I have got at the moment.

Well, I would say that practice makes perfection, so the only way to learn about graphic design in my opinion is to take physical lesson on how to master the job. You can then try to add to the learning process by using online courses as well to supplement the learning you are taking already.

Thanks for the wonderful advise. This is something that I am looking forward to getting to do in the future as I am really busy with lots of activities at the moment that is takine away from getting the things that I want to do ready. The thing is I should try to find a solution to getting a physical lesson on it as soon as possible.

I'm no graphics designer but I sometimes do web design. I'm not really that good at it but what I first do is practice with colors. Websites' color palette is one of the most important parts of its design. I try to watch YouTube tutorials and learn from colleagues who do graphics and web designing as their profession.

If you have access to good YouTube channels for high quality video content tutorials on how to carry out graphic designing projects. Just like you, I have just a shallow background or experience with how to carry out graphic design. The knowledge that I have on the subject matter is only enough to get me a pass mark on it and not good enough to earn me money.

I would not say that it is the easiest way, but I think watching tutorial videos on YouTube or other websites is better than just reading books on graphics design. When I was still in college, Photoshop was been introduced to us but only the basic tools and techniques. Being good on graphics design depends upon the person's creative imagination and interest.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, books can help as well since most of the things that we have on videos are on books as well. You can't get to learn everything by watching videos and this is one reason that I prefer watching reading books as well. It is all about how we want to achieve our goals.

I agree I learn a lot of things watching videos on YouTube. And there are lot of new things one can learn in a due process. I think if we consider the process of learning. Some of the time graphics design is one such process not an easy one but we can surely learn it. Also there are paid alternatives that can teach you a lot of things.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I am just not sure of a good alternative out there where I can get to become better with graphics designing. The cases where they will just give you the guidelines and fail to follow up is something that I don't really enjoy as well.

Practice makes perfect, it is an old and basic saying that has been so effecting in almost all aspect of life. The word practice is so universal that it applies to all activities that you need to improve on. And that includes graphic design...

Yeah, skills are earned by practice. You also might want to consider your compatibility with the software. There are basically the same in function and only differs on control and features. I tried several software's like corel and krita before i got into photoshop.

Those are the softwares that can assist anyone that is looking at getting into the world of graphic designing. The thing is when we are focused on getting things done, we won't have the need to be afraid of any sort of challenge that will push us down.

To be honest, I'd say aside from taking a course on basic graphic design, watching YouTube videos would be the easiest way. And the cheapest. There are some great channels that teach the basics of Adobe products, so I'd just search for tutorials on whatever software you're wanting to learn and go from there.

I have tried watching some YouTube videos, but it seems that I am not getting the best out of it since the ones that I see on a daily basis are not giving me the necessary guidelines on how to move around with the skills that I desire to become better. Do you have any idea on which link to use?

Aside from enrolling in schools that offer this course, reading some articles will help you. Having a degree in this field is not essential to have this kind of skill. One of the best things to do is to watch youtube videos. There are lots of great video tutorials on youtube that will teach you the basics of graphic design. There are also websites that offer free lessons. As long as you are determined to learn, you will be able to make it and become a great graphic designer. Good luck!

I agree, enrolling to a right course about graphic designing, books and tutorials they really help a lot. I'm still learning to do it but I really appreciate how they put all together their idea. I usually watch more on youtube, I'm getting ideas on how they do it then I applied it if that will work on me or I need to try other style and design they provided on the video. I also asked advices to my brothers about tips because that's their job right now, still they want me to study on my own not to copy anyone's idea because they believe me that I can do it and I have my own idea when it comes to unique style of art.

I suggest to learn graphics design through friends who really knows about it. It is easier for you to ask that person a question because you are comfortable enough with him or her. However, you can also learn with so many available video tutorials online which really covers almost the basics in graphics designing. Graphics design is a very tedious job and requires a lot of time to be able to learn.

I have learned graphic design thru Youtube videos, and I will tell you, if you want to learn Photoshop or other graphic design tools, Youtube will be your best friend. There are tons of videos on Youtube that will teach from basic up to expert. I don't use books because they are too slow for me and you really need to apply your knowledge, so you want to experience it yourself. That's the best way to learn for me.

Well, I also am in the process of learning Graphic designing on my own. The field of Graphic designing is very interesting and also a little bit challenging when one has to start learning from the basics. I prefer to learning it on my own instead of taking any formal courses. I guess the basic information can be learned by reading articles and blogs of experts in this field. Nothing can beat the knowledge you can gain from watching the Youtube videos and tutorials on this subject.

Yes, the first steps in this field should be like self-development. The introductory thing is always on our shoulders. Because if not us, nobody will study something for us. And what about web design and development is something you should be globally watching. There is a lot to dive into and to investigate. When I first got acquainted with the service we had our design of the site made I was left surprised. There are not only their services listed by the way but also the domains of the sites they had worked upon. So immerse in this and make it clear for yourself if it's yours.

There are so many people here who are looking for good people to work for, as well as those who are looking for a job and a good employer. It's wonderful to see that. But I would like to point out that it is quite easy to become a good employee specializing in UI / UX. It takes learn how to design and a few free evenings a week. A few months of learning at this pace, and you'll be able to get full-fledged orders for pretty good money. And if you manage to find a contract to design an entire website, you'll be very lucky. I think it's everyone's own business, but I tried it and didn't lose out.
