Backyard garden for relieving stress

I grew up in a city apartment so it is a given that I don't know anything about gardening. But I married a backyard farmer who is fond of planting vegetables and other edibles like small fruit trees. Even if our property is not that big, we have several fruit trees and lots of vegetables including pepper, lemon and strawberry. The harvest is not much because those plants are only for home consumption. But the most benefit that I get from our garden is the relaxation and joy of picking the fruits and harvesting the vegetables. I didn't know that gardening is much fun although I know that it is also hard work.

I love gardening and definitely find it stress relieving. I’ve grown tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and variety of herbs before and it’s very rewarding. Things like pulling weeds also certainly help you alleviate any stress you might be experiencing.

I only get to attend to garden work only when I get to visit my parents and grandparents in the rural area - my village how I it's normally called.

We have lots of farms and gardens as well because we engage in both commercial and subsistence agriculture.

I don't love gardening but I know someone who does, and it's my grandmother, she really loves designing our backyard or even front yard, and it the trees gardens and plants that surrounds our house is very relaxing, like if I get stressed out I just go outside and take a breath and just watch the surroundings and just by that I feel less stressed.

That's funny. I like how you described pulling weeds as a form of stress relief. Definitely a different experience. I've heard lots of great stories about people who own backyard gardens. It's like their own mini paradise.

Oh, whenever I have a stressful work day I’m out pulling weeds! I guess it’s good in the sense that my work days that cause stress at least mean my garden looks fantastic!

It is true! A mini paradise it is! I think that the garden being another space that they could work on and decorate according to their tastes is another reason why a lot find sanctuary in gardening. And it transcends gender too! Whoever you are, you could always learn and take on gardening. And everyone would feel satisfied if they reaped what they have worked for. But I would agree that pulling weeds may be a different matter to me too. Haha. It is a tedious job and it gives me back pain all the time!

I agree with you. Gardening is one of my bonding with my mom. I love planting flowery plants. I have this something with the cactus. Im so amazed of those plants.

It is definitely rewarding to see that you have been able to grow crops on your own. No matter how many, the sight of fruits and vegetables on your garden is very satisfying. They oddly taste better too! Or that last part may be a placebo effect on me. Nevertheless it really relieves me of stress when I do gardening.

I also have a backyard mini vegetable garden where I grow Onions, Garlic, Ginger, Sweet Potatoes and other Root Crops. I tried planting tomatoes but they're somewhat sensitive and they always dry up. Earlier today we just harvested Bittergourds and Chinese Okra.

Well, my dad is for sure the gardener of my family. We don't have a lot of space, but a little backyard/patio, and that's where he likes to plant. So far, he has been able to grow avocados, lemons, papayas, tomatoes, and peppers. He also likes to keep herbs like oreganon, rosemary, and basil. Is not like he has been planting all of them at the same time, but on seasons, and he really has done a great job.

I’ve actually seen some amazing balcony gardens! When I lived in an apartment I only grew herbs but I’ve seen people do some amazing things with their balconies! I think if you’re really passionate about balcony gardening there are even online groups all about them!

So true. One of my best friends live in a 7th floor, so she's taking all her chances on her balcony. So far, she has grown cherry tomatoes, peppers, greens, and some herbs. That's pretty good, taking in consideration her balcony is not a big one. She also likes to decorate her plants and balcony, so it you really enjoy the view with her gardening 7 floors up.

Small gardens are something that I can call cute but very helpful. Growing plants and vegetables within your reach may help you save some money somehow. My parents also make good use of our backyard and plant some vegetables and herbs. It is really helpful as it helped us to cook a meal using only those vegetables planted by my parents and we are satisfied with the outcome.

I live in a province and we have a small farm. I love planting any types of plants. I usually plant flowers and my parents love to plant fruit-bearing trees and vegetables. I also help too in planting. I am very proud of my ten avocado trees Backyard garden for relieving stress. I love avocado. When I garden I forgot my worries and I just enjoy it.

Oh, I’d love to be able to grow my own avocados! I adore them but they’re pretty expensive where I live. Being able to grow my own would mean cost savings in the long run, but where I live just doesn’t have the climate for it.

I don't know how to plant fruit bearing trees and even vegetables. I can't seem to make them grow. I am more handy with flowers and other plants. I think gardening can be for everyone if they try, they just shouldn't expect good results the first time. Like I did, I think I killed a lot of plants before I got the hang of gardening.

Wow you are great! You must have one of those "Green-hands". Those who are blessed to be good with plants. Ten Avocado trees! That is something. You are very fortunate to be living in a larger space where you could plant. I live in the city and it is very crowded in here. There is almost never space for gardening. That is why I learned vertical gardening. It is basically using old soda plastic bottles as planters hanged on the wall. There I plant tomatoes and other small plants. But I could never fit even a single avocado tree there! haha.

That's a lot of avocado trees. I love avocado, good thing that my grandmother has a tree of it. Eventhough we only have one tree of avocado, it still provides us sweet and delicious avocados that we enjoy every year.

My parents also love gardening. We save money and limit ourselves in buying be vegetables and fruits from the market. The beauty about it is that, you'll really get to see the fruit of your hard work and be able to harvest what you planted. It's very fulfilling and very different from what you experience in the city.

Gardening and growing your own produce really does mean you can save quite a bit of cash. One of my bucket list goals in life is to basically grow enough produce to be self sufficient! Right now I just don’t have the space to grow as much as I want to, but it’s a long term goal.

There are still ways to grow plants in the city. I've seen it featured at a show a few times. You don't really need a large plot to start planting. Just a nice sunny spot is nice. Though the kinds of plants you can plant is limited, it still is possible to have a garden in the city.

My mother loves gardening a lot. She spent a lot of time in the garden. And she used to spend entire day some of the time. I think now that she can't move much she is preferring those balcony gardens. And that's also one more good option for those who don't want much of garden space. It's better if one keeps on exploring.

Also, that's a super healthy way to eat veggies. Your parents don't use those industrial chemicals on their plants, so you can be sure they're fully green with environment, and organic for you guys. Nowadays, you can fridge a potato that you bought at a supermarket, and it will never get rotten, so is like you're eating plastic instead of food.

It really is a great stress reliever. Sure, it takes time to set it and prepare well, but once it is planted you really just to water it and wait for reaping. But there are also flowering plants that you could grow indoors and they require less work. Plus they add comfort for the eyes when they began to flower. There are just plenty of things that relieves stress when you learn to grow plants.

There are loads of benefits to growing plants indoors too - it helps to purify the air and there have been plenty of studies done by academics about how indoor plants positively impact overall health. Beautiful AND good for you - winner!

Yes, I agree with you. That was what our boss would always tell us, include a plant indoors to purify the air. It's a great help aside from the refreshing vibe that a plant gives to the room.

I envy those who have gardens and plant their own produce. We don't have a garden but we do have plants in pots inside the house. I would love to have a small space for a garden with vegetables and herbs but there is just no room for it anywhere outside the house.

Welcome to living in the city my friend. This is exactly what I experience here ever since I moved to the city for work or job reasons.

There is no way of getting a garden to cultivate when you are living in a rented apartment.

If you have a balcony check out balcony gardening resources online! There are actually a ton of things you can do even with a limited space - it’s pretty inspiring what some people have come up with to maximize the space that they do have!

I actually have seen a post in Facebook that it's possible to plant vegetables in the city using pots. They even have grown tomatoes, Chili's and others. There is still a chance for people to "harvest the fruit of their hard work". Lol

Over here in country, the government is agricultural driven. So, they encourage every citizen of the country to try as much as possible to have a garden in their home to aid in cultivation of what they eat at times.

So, it's a very good thing to have a garden in your home. It saves you money when you don't know.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That’s great that the government there encourages people to grow their own produce. I wish the government here would get more on board with encouraging it or even offering incentives for people to start their own gardens. Maybe one day it’ll happen!

I like those government that support the people doing their own gardening and farming. I like how some of the policies of theirs help the nation. I think having the garden at home is also a good thing. It depends on the people though if they want to do gardening. I love neighbors who are into gardening and farming. It saves money and also teaches you more about surrounding.

Wow! That is one awesome contrast in qualities but all the same seems like an awesome Family. I happen to have interacted with numerous farms both large scale and small backdoor gardens. The thing with backyard gardens is that they save you money and time that is normally spent sourcing the materials.

That sounds lovely. Not many people can say that they have their own gardens. Especially, not something with homegrown fruits and vegetables. So it's wonderful to know that you're able to experience that. I'm sure it's very soothing to visit it every day and pick your own food.

Plants also provide ample shade and really makes the home feel more relaxing. There's also a satisfaction with having what you planted grow into a sturdy plant, it becomes even more rewarding when you see them start bearing fruits and veggies! I don't see gardening as a hobby but it's a way for me to care for something else other than my family.

This is true. In some places, fruit picking like strawberry is a way to relax and have fun with your family. Also the cool breeze and fresh air coming from the plants is so refreshing. If not with your smell and touch, you would still feel peacefulness in your mind once you've seen the green leaves and colorful fruits and flowers.

Whenever I'm in a middle of a vegetable garden, I feel cool and happy, it's like nature is embracing me. It's a pity we don't have anymore space to extend the garden, I would like to plant small fruit bearing trees but it would take up a lot of space.

I think that gardening is really a good activity to relieve some stress since seeing your plants would be a relaxing activity already. I had once a garden when I was not yet working and I really like to spend my idle time before in planting some plants since it was really cool and very interesting. I feel so much happiness whenever I see that my plants are growing and have some fruits already.

I love doing those raised garden bed in garden. You can put on some simple herbs and the vegetables there. And watching them grow is definitely one thing that every one should do in such case. I'd say that if anyone wants to get rid of their life stress. For them the garden is much better place. And they can feel much better with their life routine. I have tried this but I wish I had a bungalow in such case.

I envy you@corzhens this is exactly the kind of life I would love to lead. I'm working on getting a property where I can have a kitchen garden and grow my own herbs, fruits and vegetables. I don't mind the hard work I would love to eat everything from my farm. I've watched a documentary made on the model Giselle and her husband. They live on a huge property where they grow all their own food. This is what I am dreaming of.

We have a backyard and my parents love planting vegetables and fruits. They are also raising chickens and that is only for our family's consumption. At first, I don't really appreciate what they are doing because I thought that it is just an another responsibility that I have to deal with. Until the time that I helped them to harvest their plants. It is quite refreshing and satisfying to do that it kept me occupied and busy, forgetting all the negative vibes around.

It is indeed a good way to relive stress. When you tend to work in the garden, you seemed to be focused on what to do and what to plant, so you forgot your problem in regards with your work or from your family. Aside from that, it also helps sustain your daily sustenance since you don't need to buy vegetable in the market. It is also safe and healthy if you are on organics.

My backyard looks amazing because I managed to install there a gazebo, to grow fresh grass and all this combined with a warm pool, it is amazing. I wanted to change a little bit the atmosphere and I have decided to install a gazebo weights anchors and I managed to convince my wife to do this. She thought that our backyard will be too fulfilled with useless stuff that in fact we don’t even need. But when I showed to her this https://windproofgazebos.com/gazebo-weights-anchors/ she totally agreed.

Honestly, I never thought that gardening can help to relieve stress until I tried it myself. I just had a lawn and an old swimming pool in my backyard. I barely went there, because I’m always busy at work. During the lockdown, I realised how lucky I am to have a garden. I took my old lawnmower and trimmed grass. Later, I ordered a pool cleaning service, and they helped me to re-create my pool. Now, I’m waiting for my garden furniture to be delivered. Also, I need to add some accessories, and I think my garden will be ready soon. Now, I permanently work from home, and I like to take my work outdoors. Besides, I take a 5-min yoga break if I need it.
