You should never use ammonia to clean the liter boxes as it will cause a strong smell similar to cat urine. This will cause the cat to think the liter box is unclean and could cause liter box problems. The same is true when cleaning your home or carpet, don't use ammonia for cleaning as cats will mistake that area as a place to mark.

Yes this is so true. Cat urine does smell so much like ammonia it is not even funny..

It can be very overpowering. And, outdoor cats, especially females tend to mark territory inside. That can be difficult to deal with especially if your beloved cat that once lived indoors and now lives outside can't even be allowed into the house because they won't stop spraying. :(

Yes Beverly that would be awful. I would hate to have to do that to a cat.

Our big mama cat made the choice to live outside with her mate about four years ago. He was an outdoor cat and she would sit at the door and scream for him all the time. Once she got outside, she was never happy being indoors for long after that. Though she visits us daily and will hang out for several hours in the house. Still, I have to be careful as she has outdoor cat instincts. I'm glad she is still with us even if she lives in the yard, as she has been a good mom to several of our kittens that were abandoned by their own moms.

This could explain why my cat had stopped using his litter box and was starting to have accidents.
I was so desperate that I bought a new litter box and the problem stopped. Now I know what happened as this
all occurred after I used ammonia for cleaning the box.
