Make your own playdough!!! EASIEST RECIPE

Whos tired of buying playdough and afraid that if your little one may ingest it??

Yes, most playdough you can buy in the store says they are NON toxic but seriously with all these chemical and GMOs being put into food, who knows what could be in those!

So being a mom of 3 girls who like to be doing something every minute of every day, I had to figure out a cheaper way to keep them busy and why not go with something they can help me make and then have to play with themselves!.....PLAYDOUGH!

So here is what you need...
2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)

Mix all of the ingredients together, and stir over a low heat. The dough will begin to thicken and it will start to resembles mashed potatoes.

When the dough comes away from the sides and clumps into the middle, remove the pan from heat and allow the dough to cool enough to handle.
Keep stirring and cooking the dough until it is dry and feels like playdough. (If dough is sticky dough just keep cooking a bit longer and it will work!)
Take the dough out onto a clean counter and knead vigorously until it becomes silky-smooth. Divide the dough into balls for coloring.
Make an impression in the center of the ball, and drop some food coloring in and knead it to color the dough.
(be careful around dogs with this recipe, the amount of salt in this dough if ingested by a dog can harm them)
Let me know what you guys think!

I had no idea that you made your own playdough, its funny because Lynne just mentioned this to me and i thought it was such a great idea. Seems really involved for me to do it but hey if it works for you Bravo! Thank you for mentioning dogs because sometimes people automatically assume that if its safe for us its safe for them and that is just simply not the case. I want to take the time to welcome you to Listingdock and i look forward to more of your topics. Thank you for taking the time to share this recipe im sure we will all enjoy it. Thanks for sharing!

This is actually a really cool idea. And, as much as I love the actual play-dough, we all know how that ends up! My daughter would always mash her play-dough together until it became a big ugly gray mess. And, then want me to buy more pretty play-dough from the store. It's not that expensive, maybe $1.00 per container but they give you such a tiny amount so you need three or four just for a couple good uses. And, when you add all that up, it does get expensive over time - especially if you have several children wanting their own. So, from that point of view, homemade play-dough is a real money saver.

I like the idea that you can color the dough and customize it. Are the colors very bright or more pastel and subdued? My daughter likes the rich purple and blue colors. This might be a fun family activity, especially indoors on cold winter or rainy days. And, a great way to keep the kids busy, both in preparing (safe activities like kneading) and playing with the finished product.

hahaha....my two youngest LOVE to mix up all the colors, where as my oldest like each color the way it is supposed to be! So definitely a lot of headaches in that area, but now everyone can have their own and do what they want with it, and also have a great time making with each other!

The colors do come out more pastel like though but its still fun!

My daughter was the same way too, big jumbled messy play-dough when she was younger but as she practiced and got more finesse, she got better about keeping her play-dough separate. She started making these really cool sculptures and would take pictures - usually things she had seen on documentaries like dinosaurs. It was a very good way to engage her in the actual content she was learning by taking it into the mixed-media art form, well that being clay. The biggest frustration for her was how they would dry out and mess up. So eventually she started taking them apart, rather than saving the sculptures. I wish she had stayed with that art work as she was really good at it, though maybe for Christmas we will buy her real clay that air dries so she can save her creations easier.

Yes the other things these kids do is they leave it open and it becomes dry! I think this is the main reason why my wife decided to start making it because its getting to become a hassle to always have to buy play dough. Yes having three kids instead of just one is a game changer. You literally have to buy 3 of everything!

yess! They always seem to leave the tops off just enough for it to dry out!!

Oh yes,I have done this with my kids and it worked out perfectly. Not only did we make an activity out of making the playdough but then they also get to keep it afterwards and play with it.

I love doing this sort of things with my kids. And yes like you say you just don't know what does into products that you buy for your kids, so this is a wonderful way to ensure that it is 100% safe for your kids.

Wow! It sounds so easy to make. We do not have to worry if the kids accidentally swallow the dough because we know what it is made of. I will try this one and see if I can actually make a successful one. Thank you and I think my nieces will be happy with thid DIY Playdough.

Great post! now i can save more money on this one making it more easier for me to create my own play dough for my kids. they love making craft castles and other staff that can be mold so i really prefer using play dough than clay dough since that kids might eat the clay dough that is toxic. but for play dough no need to worry very safe to used.

I think this is a fantastic idea. what I love about all your ideas is that creative and you can do them with the kids. It also means that you get to spend more time with them, and keep them busy and entertained. I like using products that I know are chemical free, because you never know what effect they will have on the kids. during the holidays I will try this out with my kids and my niece and nephew.
