A bear in my yard last night fearless canine to the rescue

I have an interesting story for you guys, its about a bear and my dog. Just recently me and my wife purchased a Black Lab Mixed with Saint Bernard. She is young about 5 months old now, and she has already had her first encounter with a bear. Last night we had a fire out back of my house and when we where ready to come inside for the night we noticed a bear in our driveway. My wife grabs the kids and my dog Bailey starts growling. My instincts kicked in and i started yelling and running towards it. The bear was only a cub and it ran away into my front lawn and up my tree. The story does not end here, in fear that he would stay on my property i yelled and jumped around until he jumped down and ran into the woods near by. The reason im sharing this story is because i want to express how important it is to stay calm in these situations and think rationally. Bears will 90% of the time be more scared of you then you are of it. Making alot of noise and jumping around may get it to run off. It worked for me, and here in north country im sure it will come in handy again. Do you guys ever have encounters with any wild animals on your property? if so please do share them below!

As always thank you for reading please don't forget to follow me.

Its all good i understand even though he was a cub he was still pretty damn big. You did a good job at keeping the kids in check so they didn't run up to him and try to ride him lol!

Oh wow.You know I am from South Africa so loads of people think I have like wild lions and elephants hanging around my yard lol. The truth is there aren't many wild animals all over South Africa, they are mostly found in our national parks.

That said my dad has had some leopards and lynxes on his farm. They have only ever chowed his sheep and chlckens though.

Well done on staying calm and I am glad everything is fine. Well done to your dog!

I really need to come to south Africa and explore the sights. My kids would lve to take one of those tours to see different animals. Your dad seems like an awesome person and a hard worker. Is he also living in south Africa

Wow, South Africa, great. Well, I think I need more of this, I live in a tropical country so I've never had a chance to see leopards and lynxes on a farm, we only see chickens and cows. For sure never ever a bear in my backyard, the zoo is the limit. So, based on that I'm pretty sure if I ever see one of those, what I would do is to stay frozen or run like Forrest Gump. Not sure what could be worst, but I know myself and staying calm is not happening.

Your dog Bailey show its animal instinct by growling and had your wife not held her might have jumped out and pursue if probably kill the bear. Luckily it was still a cub bear, they mostly can't do any harm but with the cub showing up means that the parent big one is nearby as well and they can be very scary in appearance and dangerous as well.

Well, we don't see such wild animals in my part of Africa, Nigeria precisely but we do have snakes and they are quite a menace in some of the communities around. Lots of people die of snake bites on daily basis in some parts of African countries with little or no help against snake problems.

I have has some encounter with snakes in my compound, they practically run away fast once they see or hear any human movement. The only time snakes would bite first is when it feels threaten or accidently stepping on it. Although I am not comfortable seeing snakes on my property, I sought a way to prevent them from entering my compound in which I was given one flower that is said to scare snakes away from its scent.

Seeing a bear or be near one is always scary, we forget that a bear is a wild animal and he may be even scared than us. Your dog is a good dog and you should always appreciate him and take good care of him. I heard that is very easy to make a bear to leave you in peace if your whistles with a whistle.
