Dollar Store Plate/Mug and Sharpie Craft!

I have been eyeing this project for awhile now and really would like to do these with the girls to make gifts for our family. As you know, we don't celebrate holidays, but we do enjoying making and giving gifts to our family members! These can be so great because then can be personalized and specially made! So in order to keep this under a decent budget, you can grab some plates or mugs at the dollar store, plus they even have sharpies if you don't have those at home.

If you have stencils hanging around you can even use those to make design on your plates or mugs!!! You can write messages on them, you could make a whole dinnerware set and use any color sharpie or plates/mugs you want! (make sure you wash and dry you plate before writing or drawing anything on it. Once you have finished designing and making your mugs and plates, you just have to put them in the oven at 350* for 30 minutes and that's it! I'm not sure if these were to be put into the dishwasher if it would take off the design, so I would stick to hand washing these DIY plates. I mean even if it took off the sharpie from the washing it in the dishwasher, you could just draw it again or or draw something else and put it in the oven again!!

I know some of you will like this idea for gift giving! I was thinking of making personalized mugs for all the grandparents, aunts, and uncles and filling them with little things they enjoy like candies or little knick knacks!

Thanks for reading and enjoy!!

My mom would love a gift like this Ermini2, she keeps all the drawings and art work that my kids make, even the absolutely scribbles that my 2 year old son does!

I can only imagine how she would love and cherish a mug or even a whole dinner set with drawings and doodles done by her grandchildren.

making a whole dinner set would be really cool, and im sure my mother and mother in law would love this!!

You know i was going to actually ask you about this. I noticed that you mentioned cooking the plate after you draw your design on it. Would this be dishwasher safe? why do i feel like i would be eating sharpie markers if i use these plates? I think the outside of mugs is a great idea but plates are out for me. I don think this is something i would like as a gift it would actually mess with me mentally lol! I would think im being poisoned every time i eat off of these plates.

you're funny! that's why you cook them! LOL it helps seal it into the plate or mug. i don't think that putting them in the dishwasher would be a good idea, i'm pretty sure because the dishwasher gets so hot, hotter than any faucet, it will remove the sharpie but i'm not too sure.

I usually make D.I.Y crafts and cards which I gift to my friends and relatives for Christmas. They totally appreciate those personalized gifts. I have already started crafting my gifts for the coming Christmas as this takes a lot of time. I actually got some wonderful ideas from Pinterest.

This will really be a nice way of appreciating people around one, you don't have to buy those ones with words on them, just buy plain mugs and plates then used the sharpie to write your words and it would be heartfelt because the words would be from your heart and you'll be telling the recipients truly how you feel about them.A really awesome way of showing love and giving out gift.

I agree, doing this just not makes you save money but also it gives the receiver or the person to whom you'd be giving this gift to a joy or a heartfelt. And also, not just the gifts or the items you draw on them makes it more special but also the effort you put on it.

I have done this before! I made a set of mugs for my in-laws using permanent markers. My in-laws don’t have a dishwasher so I didn’t have to worry, but I have heard stories of the marker coming off in the dishwasher.
