Household Hacks - 10 Awesome uses for Bicarbonate of Soda!

I wrote a post a while back about the amazing uses for vinegar in the home, and here is another amazing household hack - bicarbonate of soda!

Here are some great uses for Bicarbonate of Soda:

1. A remedy for oral and vaginal thrush. Just add one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to a glass of water and drink twice a day!
2. Whiter and Brighter laundry - add a cup of bicarbonate of soda to your washing load.
3. Add 100g bicarbonate of soda to your bath to make it a spa bath.
4. Make your own exfoliator by mixing three parts bicarbonate of soda to one part water.
5. Throw some bicarbonate of soda into your toilet before giving it a good scrub.
6. Make a salve for sunburn or insect bites by adding a little water to bicarb to make a paste.
7. Unblock your drains by pouring 100g bicarbonate of soda down your drain and then pour 100g vinegar down.
8. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over your carpets then vacuum it up in the morning to freshen up your carpets.
9. Clean your fruit and veggies by adding bicarbonate of soda to a damp sponge and give them a wipe down and then rinse under water.
10. Keep cat tray smells to a minimum by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda into the litter box before you put in the cat litter.

This is cool i actually never heard of bicarbonate of soda. I had to do some research on the internet to find out. Google says that its like baking soda is that true? So many great uses for this and if its something everyone has laying around then it cost next to nothing to do. This is almost just as good as your vinegar topic that you put up not to long ago. If we all put out minds together we can make a naturally cleaned household with home made products. What a peace of mind knowing whats in the things we use on a daily basis. Yes and some of the things like the drain cleaning trick uses the vinegar with the bicarbonate of soda!

I believe that baking soda and bicarbonate of soda are different but similar. Perhaps bicarbonate of soda is one of the ingredients in baking soda? You will find both in the baking section of the supermarket.

I think that bicarbonate of soda and baking soda are the same thing, especially since they are both found in the baking section of the grocery. There is also what is called "washing soda", which is in the laundry section of the store, and it cannot be used for food, or invented in any manner like baking soda can. I am not sure what is the exact difference between the two, except that one can be used in cooking and the other can only be used for cleaning. Another use for baking soda is for brushing your teeth, and it can be used plain, or mixed with a little hydrogen peroxide to be used as a whitening toothpaste, and has no dangerous added chemicals like regular commercial toothpaste sometimes has.

Don't quote me on this but as far as I know baking soda and bicarbonate of soda aren't the same thing. They are just very similar, even in their molecular structure.

We always have both in our household but I had no idea about some of these tricks. Especially the last one seems useful for me specifically. I have three cats at home and they have a big cat litter. I want to try if the bicarbonate of soda really helps with the smell. Do you maybe know how much of it I have to put inside? Will it bother the cats or they won't notice? Thanks for the help

Cool,.i can remeber we use it for cleaning our oven, For a highly effective inexpensive oven cleaner, simply sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the oven, spray or sprinkle with water until it forms a paste and leave for several hours. Stuck on grease and burnt on food wipes right off.

yea,thanks for sharing this, just learned the many ways one can actually use soda carbonate, I only knew it as a teeth whitener and an ingredient for baking but with this write-up, I can put it to more use.

It's amazingly cool, how many ways bicarbonate of soda can be used, nature truly provides the best remedies. It's also great value for money considering all the things it can do.

One of its properties, as mentioned in your list, is that it neutralizes odor. It's frequently used to freshen your breath. This is often a recommended solution for persistent bad breath because it neutralizes instead of covering up bad breath.

It can also be used as a deodorant if you want to avoid chemicals found in store bought deodorants.

Another surprising use of bicarbonate of soda is that it can be used to extinguish a minor grease or electric fire. When it's heated it produces carbon dioxide ,which is one of the agents used to extinguish a fire.

These tips are amazing! I have heard about some of them (and about vinegar too) from a tv show about natural ways to clean your house. Bicarbonate of soda is very cheap and natural so it's better to use it than some dangerous chemicals.

Thank you so much such an informative sharing of idea. I never heard eversince of Bicarbonate word in my entire life and if ever, i did forgot it already. In my further research In inorganic chemistry, bicarbonate (IUPAC-recommended nomenclature: hydrogencarbonate) is an intermediate form in the deprotonation of carbonic acid. It is a polyatomic anion with the chemical formula HCO− 3. Bicarbonate serves a crucial biochemical role in the physiological pH buffering system. Now i know everything in it.
