Do you listen to music when you write?

I'm a freelance writer who is looking at working full-time as a writer since this is what gives me joy. Recently, I have realized that having the music on when I work is something that I am getting addicted to. Do you really enjoy working as a writer or any work online with the music on?

Actually, I don't listen to anything when I write, for some I guess it's helpful, but in my case, I don't want to, because it really makes my mind uncomfortable.

I think that we have different preferences on what works better for us. There was a time that I was having issues with listening to such kind of music when I write, but at a point, I got to he comfortable with it which is pretty okay for me.

I tried listening to music while writing but at one point I just stop writing and sing along with the music and it will indeed make me forget points or what I plan on writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

menchuuy58
I agree with you. If you play music, you can forget your points. You begin to sing along with the music.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
Not for me. The music actually acts as an important background and I have gotten so used to it that I never lose any concentration when it is on.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

menchuuy58
That is good for you. I lose my concentration at times that there is noise. I want a noise free place.

I usually do like peaceful places when I write. But then the cafes I frequent usually have a soft music in the background. I guess that is why I like playing music on the background while I write.

Listening to music while writing can be a good idea to set your mood and give some inspiration. However, all writers are not the same. Maybe it works for some butnot for the others. Nonetheless, it's a good suggestion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jayjaydimson
Yes, and suddenly, you will stop writing and started to sing, and your mood on writing will loose.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jayjaydimson
Yes lol, same as me, that's why I more likely to have a peace of mind when I am writing stuff.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

menchuuy58
That's right. We have different preferences. I listen to videos while I write.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
Wow that is nice and something that would be the opposite of what I like since when I have videos playing it will reach a point when I have to shift the concentration to watch the video especially at the juicy parts.

I agree with you. Each of us have differing views and preferences. What works for you might not work for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jayjaydimson
Yes, we have our different perspective on things that we do.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

jayjaydimson
Yes, we do have our own perspective, and that's only my opinion because I feel like I can think imaginative when my mind is focused only on writing stuff.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That is definitely what works out for you and mainly it is dependent on the manner that you got used to which means that it is unique to you and that is great.

Both are okay for me. It all depends to me what type of music I'm listening while writing. I listen to love songs, mellow music, saxophones and christian songs when writing. It stimulates my brain and make me more relax. I found myself more inspired listening to this types of music.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Me too. I only allow soft, peaceful music. I feel like everyone is distracted by loud sounds while writing. It's a good idea to find a quiet space before starting. That way, you can lessen potential distractions from your ongoing work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I browse online to know the best music for reading and I was told to download Classical music which I did but I still think it's not good because any thing noise can distract writers whether cool music or not.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It's really an individual preference. What works for you may not work for others. Something like that. So it's okay if you prefer silence. In fact, I've read that lack of noise can be beneficial to our brains. It allows them to process stuff at a much more efficient rate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
The type of music also changes and depends with the person since there are people who naturally love loud music as others love the soft kind and some still are hooked to the classical type.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
There are people who rarely concentrate without some form the f noise in the background and for me I have gotten used to this.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

menchuuy58
That's great. I think soft music is good. It lessens potential distractions as you write along.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It does as long as you're okay with it. You feel as though you're being transported to a different place. This is how a lot of creative writers get things done. Especially, fiction novelists.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Youngshark
Yeeah, I have heard of this with some of the great names out there. They have some habit of loving either classical or any kind of soft music depending on the area that one originates from and what they are used to.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's right. They imagine the places their stories go to. It's as if they're real. It helps them establish how the world appears to its readers.

Soft music is great for writing peaceful things. Like poems and diary entries.

Classical music can really have a positive effect to our mentality. There were researches that suggest that if infants are made to listen to classical music, these would help mental development in their formative years.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

emiaj55
I agree. Somtimes upbeat songs just makes me lose focus on what I am writing and more on the songs playing. Lately I have been listening to classical instrumentals and monks singing lauds and vespers. It helps when I don't understand what they were saying so I don't focus on them. But I don't recommend listening to them on wee hours. They could creep you out. At they did creeped me out, lol.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's so funny. I also find them creepy at times. It's like you're listening to something otherworldly. But in the worst way. Especially, those terrifying Latin opus. It's used for end of the world scenes in movies.

I feel it uncomfortable to me too, I can listen to the music first and then write but I don't listen to music while I write, it causes distraction.

I did it before. What I do now is listening to videos while I write. Although its difficult, I can do it.

The same is true with me. I don't listen to music when I write. But I listen to videos.

I get really distracted with any music when I write sometimes, but there are a few songs that inspire me to write instead of distracting me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Music can be inspirational indeed. I listen to them as I write and they motivate me as I punch the buttons of my computer.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you. Listening to anything could it be a song, video or even instrumental music makes my mind more confused on what to focus, the one I am writing or the audio I am listening. This on proves that we can't serve two masters at a time. LOL

I feel the same way too. There are times that I liked music playing while I am working and there I times that I dont want to. I guess it all depends the moods of the person.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do listen to music when I'm writing but not all the time. Sometimes I like it peaceful and quiet. Right now, it's almost December and that means Christmas Songs for me. During some nights I would play classic Christmas songs from the 40's and 50's. I like the ones sung by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Dean Maetin.

Listening to music can be relaxing and set our mood for the day or for the task at hand. However, we should set our limitations because it can also distract us in some important matters.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
I think for me it is different because when I am writing I never used to listen to some music because it destroy my focus and concentration while writing. I cannot make a good content when writing if I am listening to some songs. As much as possible I see to it that the place that I would be working for is quite and at peace since it is the only way for me to have a good creation in my writings. I just only listen to some music after I had made an article because that is the time that I want to feel relax because it is tough to write great articles and it is really time consuming.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is what most people are. They enjoy a very quiet atmosphere. It is on this background that they write deep in the night or on the wee hours.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Yes, it's likely the case. People enjoy quiet evenings for their peacefulness. You are more inspired to write because everyone else is asleep. That means no one will be there to distract you from what you're writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I feel very comfortable writing in the night, the only problem I have is the sound of aeroplane that pass through the sky that distracts me so I just wait till it pass and continue.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree. It is very conducive to write on wee hours since it is so quiet and peaceful. It s like you could put all your effort and thought into what you are doing without caring for distractions. It takes toll of course so be sure take your rest as well. Get enough sleep.

Music is like a boost to me and listening to one when I write always push me to a higher level which is really good. Sometimes, it may not work well for me, but making out time to write while the music is on is something which I really enjoy doing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I wonder the qualities of music that make it so inspirational while writing. Soft soothing music works fine for me. Those with quick beats are hard ones to use while writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You pretty much said it all. Noisy surroundings doesn't make for a good day of writing. Our workplace informs so much of our productivity. That's why it's essential to keep it as far away from loud sounds as possible. Even small yet irritating sounds.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
Right, sometimes I listen to music while I edit my article or while I proofread it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
It depends on my mood really. Sometimes I don’t mind having music on in the background, but sometimes I find it to be too much of a distraction. It often comes down to the type of music, too. If it’s too harsh and abrasive I won’t want to listen to it. If it’s soothing and relaxing there’s more chance I’ll enjoy it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
If the music that is playing in the background where you're trying to work is very loud, there is always going to be an increased possibility of being easily distracted by the loud sound of the music playing.

Just keep the music low in volume and just enjoy the little bits it produces and the lyrics as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

One thing I actually don’t mind on when I’m working is educational podcasts. Somehow I find them motivating, even though I’m not fully focused on every word the speaker is saying. Sometimes I guess I assume I’ll learn things by passively listening to them!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Multitasking is what we have adopted of late. It is not a good habit though. It is good to listen to music during its time and write in the writing span too. Though it is oersinal preference and I often write with music in the background, it is not a good habit.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I get what you are saying, there are times where I want to listen to music while I write, but there are times where I don't want to.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It actually depends on my mood. Sometimes, when I feel like my mind is relaxed and at ease, I don't intend to listen to music. But, when I have that moment when I feel like I'm all pressured with other factors in my writing, I always go to my classical music playlist because it helps my mind fall into proper place.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yeah that is one thing also. It depends on the mood of the person. If the person feels to listen while working well it is not a big deal as long as you are not affecting others.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I only listen to the classical music I have on my playlist when I get tired of writing and want to take a break or before writing but I feel distracted when having it in the background while writing.

This way am motivated to write. My concentration increases and I can write high powered articles.

Yes, I know a person who is like this too. Most writer want a quiet background so it is really weird thing to do.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It is a good way to boost concentration. One funny thing is that there are times that I have not really taken time to understand some things as regards the benefits of listening to music when we write, but at this point, it is quite important.

Sometimes when I feel deaf by the quietness of the place. I enjoyed it but the music should be soft and not too loud. It helps me to relax and more enjoyable to work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I’ve actually heard a number of people feel the same way, where too much silence actually bothers them in the same way that super loud music would for other people.

It’s always interesting - everyone’s unique and has their own personal likes and dislikes, or things that make their work life easier.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Soft music is good, but sometimes, I play jazz as that is a way that I boost my mindset to keep doing things that are pretty nice as well. I have gotten to that point where I can say that music is almost part of everything that I do.

This depends on the concentration of an individual. Some freelancers prefer staying in a quiet environment, while others like I prefer having some music playing in the background.

I rarely watch TV, but I am always playing music, although at a volume that cannot distract me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Watching television is a complete no for me because my attention will definitely be divided as I'm the kind of person who pays much attention and focus on television shows.

I can listen to any kind of soft music but never watch television when I'm trying to write an article.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Definitely, music is a party to my writing. In fact, music has been something that I can't do without on daily basis because it gives me the motivation and concentration to do my work diligently. The music wouldn't have to be a loud bang music but anything soft and calm would be perfect for me.

Normally in the early morning, I do work with listening to Christian music because it sets me in the mood to worship God and still do my writing jobs as well.

Remember that without God in anything you do, there is no way of getting to succeed in the online business and any other thing. So God comes first as well for me.

Contrary to the belief that women can multi task, I cannot write and listen to music. I can however, listen to music and feel inspired to write, but in order to write, I need silence. Seems like there ae a lot of Christians here. I find I am listening to worship or worshipping in church and have to stop and scribble down the poem that the worship inspired. For that reason, I need a notebook in church. As the person above says, God first and the rest falls into place.

You need to try an instrumental song. Different individual when they listen to a words, they are processed within the same side of the brain you are using for while you doing something. The opposite side is more tuned in to melody and you may do simply fine listening to classical.

No. I'm can't focus writing when I'm listening to music. I am more productive when the surroundings is quiet. I'm easily distracted with noise. So listening to music while writing doesn't work for me.

There are others that can still write in noisy surroundings. My profession in college used to study and write while listening to rock music. He said he trained himself for it so he can still focus in writing even if it is noisy.

I like listening to music. Though, it's not something I do while writing. I find it distracting. This is especially true for songs with lyrics and vocals. I'd prefer smooth orchestra and classical music. Something gentle and calming. It will greatly improve my mood.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's true for me as well. I do prefer silence overall, but if there was music on I'd much prefer it to just be instrumental music rather than anything with lyrics too. I guess I feel like with lyrics, my brain automatically tries to listen to those and pay attention to them - when I really just need to be paying attention to my work!

I always listen to soft music when I'm writing. Mostly Jazz and Bossa Nova. I usually write during the night, up until dawn and when it's around 2AM, I would play Christmas music while drinking some hot coffee and smoking a stick of cigarette.

I don't intentionally put music on when I am writing. But my husband and I are in the same room and he loves to listen to music. So I better learn how to write with the music playing. Our bedroom is my home office and it's the most comfortable place in the apartment to do my work. The music doesn't disrupt my writing process. I don't often use music for my writing inspiration though.

I have the habit of playing the music whenever I write. Although at times it just drowns in the background whenever I got into my writing too much. Plus music calms me whenever I'm too stressed in my writing. I believe there are also studies that says listening to music while doing a task increases success rate. But I don't really need scientific basis. Listening to music while writing is just a must.

That's pretty nice to know! One thing that I have noticed about listening to music is that there are ways that you can always have a good time with it which is good. When I write, I listen to cool songs as this is one of the ways that I can enjoy my time on it as well.

I do appreciate those people that can work or write articles while listening to some music since they have a good concentration. Well, honestly I don't think I will be able to concentrate on my writing if I keep some kind of music on. I love to listen to music and I usually like to listen to music when I take short breaks in between my writing. I feel refreshed after listening to music and then I can resume my work again feeling recharged. However, if I keep the music on while writing then I will slowly start listening to the music instead of focusing on my writing

Yes, all the time. I usually listen to classical or instrumental music. It makes my mind more relax and can reflect more of my thoughts. I've read a lot of research that suggests classical music improves brain function - it's something about the type of music promoting dopamine, one of those "feel good hormones" that the brain has.

Incredible that a particular type of music can improve the way our brain works!

For me it allows me concentrate without difficulty. Once I listen to song, I'm able to simply get on with work and forget about everything else until the end. Additionally, my thoughts simply appears to open up once I listen to song. Specifically if it isn't too dance, however calm and electronic. Me and my buddy did an experiment in which we both wrote a innovative writing piece even as song was playing, and then another when there wasn't.

In some offices they listen to music to be more productive.

Definitely. Music is the only thing that makes me awake because I actually get sleepy whenever I write similar to when I read books. It's actually a big problem of mine and thanks to music I am able to overcome such problem. I'm actually more of a speaker and sometimes when I have an idea that I want to write about, I don't jot it down but instead I record my voice on my phone. However, there are certain types of music that I can't listen to whenever I'm writing and those are Rock music and Hip-Hop with full of rap parts because it kind of distracts me.

Thanks. I actually also hate myself because it's really awkward to hear my own voice especially that it's a bit feminine and softy which is definitely unpleasant to my ears because I sound so gayish a lot. However, because I don't have a choice, I just endure itbecause I would really have a hard time if I don't.

I love to hear music because I am music lover too but then I just finished first my article writing whenever I want to listen with some music since I don't want to be distracted with what I am doing. I need to focus so that I can come up with a better ideas. It makes me relax hearing the sweet sound of music after doing my work which is really good to have since I can easily feel asleep.

There are two times that I always enjoy my music and one of them is when I am making contents. Listening to some songs always give me that super feeling that I won't gas out till I am done with what I am writing.

I also listen to music whenever I write. This keeps my mind fresh and keeps me from getting bored. I always put my whole playlist on shuffle so I'll be surprised by the songs because there are many genres in my songs playlist. I'll just skip songs if I am tired of it but eventually I'll listen to them so I don't delete them from my playlist.

I play all kinds of music when I am writing right from. The soft songs to the high bass songs and end it with rap. It is like an energy to me and a good way for me to keep doing great write-ups.

I do listen to music while I write, but not the typical kind of music that most people might think. While writing, I can’t listen to anything with a fast tempo or any sort of melody because I feel that it throws off my concentration. However, writing in total silence also makes the process feel incredibly long and tedious sometimes.

In order to find a comfortable balance between concentration and entertainment, I listen to ambient or atmospheric music. It’s the kind of music without any real melodies or beats, but just has these shifting tones and echoes. It’s similar to the music I use to meditate to.

Instrumental music really puts me in a mood to create, which I've used to my advantage since early college. I used to put on God Is An Astronaut or some of Buckethead's more acoustic stuff when I wanted to buckle down and write a paper or even study for class. Working in total silence can get unnerving for me, too.

What sort of atmospheric music do you listen to? Like a curated playlist, or do you have go-to artists you work and meditate to?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I can’t say that I have any go-to artists in particular. I mostly just look up random videos on YouTube and click through stuff that suits my fancy. I then bookmark them and basically pick them at random. For example, today while I did my work, I was listening to a track on YouTube with Tibetan singing bowls and some rain sounds in the background.

That brings me to another point I forgot to mention, sometimes I just put on some white noise instead of any music. Rain, ocean waves, wind blowing, a ticking grandfather clock; basically anything that has a rhythmic nature to it and managed to both drown out the deafening silence of writing alone in a room, and drown out any outside noise that might be distracting.

As I'm typing this, I just realized there is in fact an artist that I regularly return to, and his name is Kip Mazuy. If you've heard of the Calm meditation app, he has his music featured on there. Almost all of his work is that very echoey, atmospheric, ambient genre that both relaxes and helps with concentration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeSX83QtPUI

Sure. Who doesn't? It helps your flow of ideas and gets you into a certain frame of mind you need to write better. Sometimes I deviate between playing music in my home, and just having it playing in my ears through my headphones while I'm writing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't feel comfortable playing songs with the headphones when I write. My doctor has warned me about the dangers of this kind of act and that is one reason that I stay away from doing so.

Listening to music while working is a good factor to set your mood. However, this is not applicable for everyone. Some people can get inspired listening to music while working while some people get distracted. I love listening to music too but in some cases it distracts me.

I absolutely love discovering new music, and for this reason, I tend to listen to music that I'm really familiar with while I'm working. If I'm listening to a discovery playlist or something I've never heard before, I'm typically more inclined to listen to what's playing to see if I like it, which can be really distracting.

I could see how this could work the opposite way for other, however. You're definitely right: it's all about personal preference.

There are people that a little noise when they are writing can distract them and I think that you are one of them. It is advisable that you do your writings in some cool places where you will feel less pressure doing so as well.

Music has played a huge role in my life for a long while, and as a result, I find myself listening to music almost any time I'm doing something doesn't require me to listen to audio. So in short, yes, I tend to listen to music while I write! I'll usually turn on a playlist that I'm familiar with or an album that I've listened to for a long while, that way it doesn't distract me too much, but otherwise I think it really helps me out!

I definitely love writing while listening to music. It brightens up my mood and helps me think of more ideas. It gives me energy to work and lets me feel that I could do it. It is like giving me my own creative open space that I could use to think of different ideas that I could work on. Listening to music while writing is something that is really effective for me.

@ajahcuizon This is very true. Sometimes, when I sit down to write - the creative juices aren't flowing like I wish they were. So I turn on some music, and a few moments later it's practically a waterfall of ideas and epiphanies.

True. It is like a thing that triggers our mind to function. That suddenly, ideas would came up flowing into our mind. It also helps us to be awake and not to get bored while writing. I just keep it in an average volume so that it will not disturb me that much.

I write while listening to music that I think my characters would enjoy/need to hear in the moment. Also, listening to an entire album at a time helps me lose myself in the task because it helps me keep track of time. I don’t need to keep looking down at the clock so I don’t accidentally skip lunch or other important life things. Whenever an album ends is when I check the time. Then I find another and keep going

That's cool. I'm not really an album person. I find that I only enjoy the best songs in any given album. It's rare to find an album where you like all the songs included. I kind of cringe at tracks that fall behind the quality of the best songs there.

I have to have a quiet, peaceful surrounding when I am writing anything. If music is going on in the background, while I am trying to write, it distracts me. I enjoy listening to music thou, not while working. If you can write and listen to music at the same time, that is wonderful.

Oh, that's unfortunate. I guess not all of us can do that. So I know the feeling of being able to write while listening to music. It's a very different experience. There are good days and bad days. Sometimes you have to turn off the music because you're just not feeling it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

On the contrary, I find turning the music on while writing creates distraction and may cause me to lose focus. But I certainly agree that some people have different opinion on this, as I observe some of my colleagues who like to engage in other activities while writing. For example, some of them like to eat, chit chatting online etc while writing. To me those activities are very distractive.

Most of the times music makes day productive actually. Every time I am out of ideas or words, when working with music, ideas will just pop out of nowhere. Maybe because music helps us to calm down and relax. Compared to working without music as I observe I tend to panic or always out of ideas.

In my case, I usually don't write with music. Nevertheless, I must confess that the times I have tried to, the muses have behaved very well. Normally I put a song in a loop, a song that conveys what I want to put on paper because, yes, I do believe that it influences our writing. If we listen to a sad song, we will be predisposed to write something sad. You can play with it: put songs at random and let them spin the story. Or, on the contrary, to know very well what is the writing goal and choose the right song for it, to help us get into the environment we want to create.

Many of us have our kind of music we play that really suits our day. I love listening to radio when I was a kid. Influenced of my family actually. Before I thought mellow songs are best already that I ever heard. Then My brother introduced me his jazz collection and I was like this is the best of the best! Sometimes I do, I get emotional when I'm listening to music and that's a great way to make me have more ideas, I can't really explain how it works but maybe subconsciously every single song the music and the lyrics hits our brain on a deeper level that results to words being written and that's amazing too but I don't really do it all the time sometimes I just prefer quietness because when my brain is more relax then it's easier for me to get in a state of flow where I just write stuffs without consciously think of it, it just goes out naturally.

Yes. Listening to music is pretty cool and sets you up for a work tune. I think it's very necessary. But it is also important that the sound is of high quality. Otherwise the magic is lost. But it's also cool when you not only listen, but also play musical instruments. You can do it at https://guitar-amp.com/. With such instruments it will be a pleasure to make music!
