Would you ever own a tarantula as a pet?

A few weeks back me and my kids went to go get a hamster from our local pet store and in this pet store they sell everything from lizards to rabbits, rats, mice, gerbils, budgies, hamsters and even tarantulas and I was just thinking back to that visit to the pet store and the fact there were tarantulas in there and it got me thinking, I wonder how many people would have a tarantula as a pet?

I myself have a huge fear of spiders, I see one within a few feet of me and I panic and get all sweaty and shaky so me owning a tarantula as a pet would definitely be a no go for me. Just the way they move, their legs and their eyes creep me out and the fact that tarantulas are so hairy and big and ugly looking maker me shudder.

Would you ever own a tarantula as a pet or have you ever owned a tarantula as a pet?

For me it's a big NO too. I'm scared of them and when I see one near me I'll run across the room just to get away with it. I remember crying because my classmate give me a spider once.

I don't like spiders too. I get that some people like them. But there are just too many risks with getting bitten and stuff. Better to be safe.

It is a no for me also. I don't like to pet animals who is not petable, if you know what I mean. There are animals that is not a pet material. I don't see spiders as a pet. I don't think it will help me in some things at home.

I'll definitely have a Tarantula as my pet, in fact, i have one right now. Tarantula is not scary as you think because they won't hurt you unless you hurt them. Biting is just their survival instinct to protect their selves so if you take care of them like a regular pet it's not a problem having it. I am amazed everytime they mold and change their skin. They are not moving or even eating once they are molding. If you notice them the same description as I said don't panic or don't touch them because they are just molding or changing their skin like a snake. Let's not limit ourselves to own a pet like this because you will never know how long it will exist on the planet earth.

I want to be happy while dealing with my pets and a spider will not do that to me. It is the 'what if' fear that I like to avoid. My nephew once had a snake and my sister was forever listless until he let that snake in the forests.
Why have something if one is not comfortable with it? Having said that I also think spiders should be given their life of freedom and not trapped - just my view.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
True. I just can't even imagine how your sister would've felt if that snake was gone for no reason and the worst part is, you don't know where it went so you will always be in defensive stance knowing that it would just come out of nowhere. So yeah, you are right. Why have something when in fact you aren't comfortable or secure having it in your household.

I agree that arachnids are fascinating creatures. There are hundreds of amazing species and even the venomous ones need not be feared as much as they are. They are some of the most intricate and diverse creatures in the animal kingdom.

That being said, I hate 'em. Big, small, safe, venomous. Each and every single one is creepy, icky, and gross. And I don't like 'em. Not one bit.

And with that, I give you my opinion. If it were up to me, all the tarantulas in the world would stay in the jungle, case closed.

I am not a fan of either insects or arachnids. Although I am not afraid of these animals, I think my family will freak out if I propose to keep one. Tarantulas are venomous and I have my hands tied as I already have three dogs and several aquariums. Tarantulas should stay in their natural habitat. i am not going to risk having a tarantula loose in my home..

I would never own a tarantula as a pet to be honest because I just don't like little creatures. We don't have any pets at the moment anyway but we are looking at getting a dog as a pet in the coming months. We're not sure however what type of dog we are getting. I'm not a huge fan of little creatures and I don't think anyone from my family is fond of a tarantula either. I'm also not sure how any of us would react if it managed to get out of its cage/tank. More than likely we would all just panic and run around like lunatics.

God no! I have fear of two types of animals: snakes and spiders. I have actually touched both of them because we had various animal species in my high school. We had this big special biology class room with different animals and the teacher sometimes took them out to show them and tell us more about each kind. However, I just don't like spiders. I respect them as species but I'd never own one as a pet. Even if I see one crawling up my wall I freak out like a child Would you ever own a tarantula as a pet? now imagine me owning a tarantula. It would never work! They are special kinds of animals that aren't for everybody. You truly have to like spiders.

Holyy coww of course noottt! I'm getting chills while reading your post and whenever I see the word spider and tarantula. >.< I don't know if you guys saw this viral video where in some dude was trying to capture the spider or was it a tarantula from his ceiling and it eventually fall of to his face and it's so cringe and I literally had goosebumps all over my body. @_@

Well, I'm not afraid of spiders, but I'm not very sure of having one as a pet. First, I have a dog, so I don't know if having both together would be a good idea. Second, I have no idea how to take care of a Tarantula, so I don't want to hurt it, or give the wrong food, or something alike. The other thing is, I can be very distracted sometimes, so I don't want to leave the cage/home open, and then step on it. For sure, it sounds very interesting, but I'm not sure I would be a good owner of one.

OMG! I would never ever have a Tarantula as my pet ever. I hate spiders, and whenever I see one I just can't help but dislike it. When my family had a vacation somewhere in a mountain I encountered different kinds of spider, small and big. When I get closer of one of the big spider I was total shock and scared, it crawls to my hands up until my neck and that's when I start hating any kinds or form of spiders. That's why I would never love to have a Tarantula as my pet.

Why would i own an insects as pet, when they are many stray or homeless dogs out there in the streets or dog shelter. i will leave them and start petting an insect or anthropoid lol. but seriously i will never own, or think of such. Do you of the diseases it might be a carrier of?. i hate cats but i will prefer a blind or lame cat over a tarantula as my pet. yuck!.

Nope, I do not wish to have spiders as pet. However, I did noticed a regular brown tiny spider was molding on the wall for a week or so. I thought that the spider was dead because there was a whitish mold covering it and it wasn't moving either. Then one day, I saw the spider moved out from the "mold" with a new look! Spiders are magnificent insects but not pets.

I am afraid of spiders but I mostly wouldn't get them because they don't mesh well with me as I don't find them beautiful at all. I have a few friends who like spiders and scorpions so I do understand that some people have a natural attraction to them. I guess it's just something that I was never exposed to when I was younger so I never grew up to like them. Growing up, the pets around me were always cats and dogs, so those are the ones I gravitate towards the most.

This answer to this is "hell no". I do not think I could sleep knowing one of these was in the house. My friend had one, and he had to place a huge rock on top of the terrarium cover because she figured out how to lift it and get out at night. Their hairs are terribly irritating, and as pets go, they are not very friendly, cuddly, or affectionate. Sure, they are cool to look at, but they truly freak me out, especially when they molt and leave that shell of their exoskeleton sitting there. They are creepy, and I would rather smash them with a boot than feed them and give them a place to live. That's just how I feel about these crawling menaces.

I wonder what happen to little girl's father after he had a cute combat with the tarantula, and the poor little creepy creature does not fail to make us scream every time he and his other creature-like moves. And I like how the little girl tease her father reminding him of telling his little girl that he is not scare at tarantula.

I've tried a tarantula as a pet.I purchase it online. My tarantulas are albicep and mexican fireleg. They are 4 inches long.Keeping them as a pet is a good hobby for the one who's afraid of it.It is a way to fight the fear on spiders. They are not harmfull as long as they have a food supplies and you keep them as a son.Caring them with love and tenderness. They are not so expensive to keep they eat only bugs and they eat only once a week. You can produced a food for them.Just keep a pair of dubia and thats all.The supply last a longer period of time. But i didn't recommend for those whi has an allergy because its very danger to them when they bite you.I keep them because i want to challenge my self to have an exotic pet.If i can keep them and to breed them.

I haven't seen one in person but i'm sure it would be the start of my fear if i encounter one. Having a pet for me is like having a friend, i should be able to embrace and cuddle my pet. And i don't see myself cuddling with spider.

I don't think I'll be able to sleep properly for nights if my tarantula escape from its cage. I'll just burn the whole house down. Why not, I like such toxic pet, though they easily die, if you are not responsible enough to care of them. I have neighbors that, they breed like tarantula, it was a big tarantula my neighbor show his pet. His tarantula was a "chinese wolf spider" it's a beautiful tarantula, the same color to our common spider, here in Philippines. Thought, that tarantula was so attractive texture, it's not my ideal pet.
My ideal tarantula is a geolicosa, it's texture makes me attract such spider. It was said, it had 75 kind of species co-exist, I would to discover more about those spiders.

I would not own a tarantula as a pet the reason why is because I don't like them and I think they are very dangerous. They are not like dogs who can kiss you and obey you. They don't think and don't know what is wrong or right so they even could bite you.
So, no I would not own a tarantula as a pet not even now not even in the future.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

No, I'm not interested of owning exotic pets especially tarantula. Maybe I can take care of it for other reason but not making it as a pet. I think that owning this pet is risky because it may harm you badly. Some specie of tarantula definitely has deadly venom that can kill people in short time after they emit the venom they had. If you have lack of knowledge about this creatures don't dare to own one for your safety.

Oh My God I love tarantula they are cool and I am amazed when I am looking at them while the are crawling I'm kinda weird but I like it when my tarantula crawling in my arms Would you ever own a tarantula as a pet? I have Tarantula before but it is just a low breed, the breed of my pet is Orphnaecus he is so fat and very jolly but sometimes he is aggressive and kind of his defense mechanism arose but just very rare times when he had that behavior. What I like about them is their coolness and the shape of their body when you want a tarantula pet don't worry they are not venomous just a little pain when you are bitten, when you are bitten just rinse it with water or some germicidal soap, feed them some insects or some insects on your house like cockroach or grasshopper. They are fun just try Would you ever own a tarantula as a pet? they don't bite unless you hurt them.

I personally do not care what kind of spider it is, how big it is, or what it looks like. No pet spiders for me I am so good it is ridiculous. I am a grown man that will have my daughter kill the spider for me before I go anywhere near it. I know that sounds crazy and funny, but it is the truth. No. I will not own a tarantula or any of its arachnid family member. Well the reasons are, for one, living in a tropical country and in a location wherein wild spiders are everywhere, I think we've already reached our quota of that. Once we had a banana spider visitor in our bathroom and it wreaked havoc in our once peaceful night because it's so big and no one would want to capture it at return it to where it belongs. so I think having a pet that is not even likable by my family members seems pointless at most.

Not all spiders are deadly or dangerous. You can keep some species as pets but much like snakes, some have to be de-fanged and have their poison sack surgically removed before they can be sold for purchase.

Never, for my fear of spiders I don't think so, the thing that I would consider as a pet would only be a cat or a dog. These two have a way in our homes, but a spider can disappear in the house same as a snake as a pet. Let me stick to what am used to than trying out new pets.

Honestly I don't see a good reason to own tarantula as a pet. Not that I am scared of the spiders. But it does not seem reasonable for me to keep them. I heard of them biting and may causing people nausea. So that can be something really bad. Some people get form of extract through the poison of the tarantula. And now that things are changing. I guess it'd be reasonable to say that it's not worth keeping as a pet. Some may keep it if they want to. But based on what I have seen it'd be reasonable to say that it's not really a pet material.

I would never own a tarantula! There is no way I would be able to pick it up to put it somewhere so I could clean out its home. I don't mind to look at them in pet stores or at the zoo in the insect rooms and such, but the idea of having one actually in contact with my body gives me the creeps. I am much less afraid of spiders than I used to be, but I am by no means comfortable enough with their existence as to invite a baseball sized one into my house to live with me. To each, their own I suppose.

I would say no. A pet to me is something that could interact with me and share a mutual happiness of being together. I would have to be extra cautious living with such venomous thing which is potentially dangerous not just to me but also to other members of my family as well. A dog is the best pet that I could ever have, and I believe most people would agree that they love dog most too.

People who own exotic animals as pets are usually, mostly, passionate about it as a form of expression or adventure, and seldom to seek happinesses. But a pet to me is a thing of happiness.

Definitely I have not tried even a single time. I am really scared of Spiders specially tarantulas! I remember one time when I was young, my cousin saw a tarantula slowly coming down from the ceiling down straight to my head. It is a very good thing that cousin saw it before it landed to my head because I got totally panicked and hysterical when I knew it. How much more if the tarantula had successfully landed on top of my head? Err. I'm not sure what will be my reaction. It would be bloody and horror, I think.

I think the main point of having a pet, it's obviously to be able to "pet" it right? So, why in the world, would anybody have a tarantula as a pet, if that person is scared of one? I mean, as an owner you will have to take care about it, feed it, distract it, bath it or clean it or whatever they do, so personally I don't feel prepare to have a pet like that.

Tarantulas require very little area to maintain. They're quiet, and do not scratch the fixtures or pee at the carpets. Considering they simplest get fed two times a month and can stay in a plastic container, they're extremely cheaper to maintain and really low maintenance. Caring for them includes chucking in a food object each couple of weeks and retaining their water bowl stuffed. I clean out the enclosures each few months.

A big NO, those creatures are scary man, even with a small spider that's biting me is terrifying what more could a tarantula do? I would never own a tarantula that eats insects, or a python that eats mice. That's not for me. My friends have a chameleon that eats cockroaches and other insects. And then one-day their child broke a jar with these insects and they spread all over the house. I think it's terrible. Brrr. Also, these insects can cause health problems. For example, you can read the article about how to keep the family from roach allergies to learn more about it. And I take care of myself by not having exotic pets that eat insects for dinner.

For example, you can read the article about how to keep the family from roach allergies to learn more about it. And I take care of myself by not having exotic pets that eat insects for dinner.

I agree with you and thank you for sharing a useful article.

So if you want to have a rare pet, that is very interesting to look after, especially if you like reptiles or amphibians, you can buy yourself a frog. I have one at home and I like it. I have a Rana Temporaria, it is a gray frog originally from the United Kingdom. Before you buy one you must know some important things, for example, what eats a frog, because other pets can harm your frog, how big the aquarium needs to be, and how much water and earth you need to have in it, and also where to put it in the house. You can also search for what they eat, but I think everyone knows that they eat different insects. What Eats a Frog?
